TD Technical documentation PUB Books & magazines

Use cases

Write and maintain manuals, operating instructions, maintenance and training documents and other long, structured documents. Capture content in XML or DITA, create variants from one source with conditional text and publish them as PDF, responsive HTML5 or EPUB. Assemble books with table of contents, index, footnotes and cross-references, exchange translations via XLIFF and manage documents via Experience Manager or SharePoint.

Our assessment

Adobe FrameMaker is designed for long, structured documents: books, conditional text, cross-references, XML and DITA and output as PDF, responsive HTML5 and EPUB are documented. The program runs on Windows only and is only available as a subscription; Adobe does not describe social media templates, a brand kit or AI tools. In our view, it suits technical writing teams above all, not flyers or social media graphics.

Strengths

  • Structured authoring with XML and DITA: content rules from a DTD or XML schema enforce a consistent structure, and you can also publish via the DITA Open Toolkit.[21][20]
  • Book files made of several documents with automatically updated tables of contents and indexes, plus footnotes, endnotes and cross-references, also to other documents.[15][16][17][18]
  • Conditional text creates different outputs from one document; since the March 2026 version, a book-level template bundles variables and condition tags.[19][34]
  • From the same source, FrameMaker outputs PDF, responsive HTML5, EPUB and Microsoft HTML Help.[29][5]
  • For print there are PDF/X and PDF/A compliant PDFs, spot and process colours, colour separations on screen, and bleed and printer marks in the PDF.[5][24][25][26]
  • You exchange translations via XLIFF; right-to-left languages such as Arabic, Hebrew and Farsi are supported.[5]
  • You import Word documents with style mapping; Word and Markdown content can also be converted to DITA.[28][5]

Weaknesses

  • The system requirements of the current version only name the 64-bit version of Windows 11; downloads are available for 64-bit Windows.[3][8]
  • Subscription only: according to Adobe, the current version is no longer available as a one-time purchase.[1]
  • For Acrobat desktop features and online services for commenting on PDFs, Adobe requires a Technical Communication Suite subscription; they are not included in the FrameMaker plan.[5][30]
  • When exporting to PDF, FrameMaker converts text and graphic colours to RGB by default; for print PDFs with marks and bleed you have to switch this option off.[23]
  • FrameMaker treats PDF files as graphics on import, and only one page at a time.[35]
  • As bundled colour libraries, the help names Crayon, DIC, FOCOLTONE, Greyscale, MUNSELL, Online, TOYO and TRUMATCH; PANTONE and HKS are not among them.[24]
  • Activation and subscription validation require an internet connection; according to the FAQ, a connection is then needed every 30 days.[3][10]
  • In our view, FrameMaker is not intended for quick flyers, social media graphics or design from templates. Editorial assessment

Edition, version and price

For individuals, Adobe FrameMaker is only available as a subscription. According to Adobe, the current version is no longer sold as a one-time purchase, and there is no upgrade path for older perpetual licences with a serial number. The reference edition in this comparison is the individual plan that you take out directly in the Adobe store: an annual contract that you pay monthly. According to the buying guide, the individual plan has a term of one year with monthly or annual payment. Adobe only shows the price of annual prepayment during checkout; it is not verified here. Online, you buy one licence per transaction. Teams buy via the Teams plan (Value Incentive Plan), large organisations via enterprise licences.

The current version is the September 2026 version with version number 18.0.1.312 of 30 September 2026. According to Adobe, it brings security fixes and updated libraries. New features last arrived with the March 2026 version, publicly available since 31 March 2026: a book-level template for variables and condition tags and the “Find All” option in the Find/Change dialog. Adobe lists Lightweight DITA as a beta; it does not count in this comparison.

There is little leeway on the platform:

  • Windows: the system requirements of the March 2026 version name the 64-bit version of Windows 11, plus a Core i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 5 GB of free disk space. Displays up to 4K are supported.
  • Older information: the 2022 FAQ still names Windows 10 and Windows 11. For the current version, the system requirements page applies.
  • The system requirements do not mention Windows on ARM processors; this is not verified here.
  • macOS, Linux, iPad, smartphone or browser: Adobe names no version of FrameMaker for these.

The interface is available in German. For the subscription editions Adobe names English, French, German and Japanese, and the list of fixes for the March 2026 version explicitly mentions the German interface. The German user guide is available as a PDF dated March 2026 and as online help.

As long as your subscription is active, Adobe says you have access to the current version and do not need to worry about upgrades. When the subscription ends, so does the right of use: according to the additional terms for software, you may only use the software while your subscription is valid. You store your documents locally, for example in FrameMaker format, as MIF or as XML.

Layout and typography

FrameMaker works with pages and text frames, but it is built for documents whose text flows across many pages. Page layout is controlled by master pages, which the German interface calls Vorgabeseiten. A double-sided document has at least one master page each for left and right pages, and you can assign a different master page to a body page at any time. FrameMaker also has reference pages.

You format text with paragraph, character and table styles that FrameMaker manages and applies via catalogues. Text flows through linked text frames: if two frames are linked, the text runs from the end of the first into the second, also onto other pages.

For consistent line alignment you synchronise baselines. FrameMaker creates an invisible grid in each text frame and aligns the first line of each specified paragraph to it. According to the help, you adjust neighbouring text frames so that the distance between their upper edges is a whole multiple of the grid. This is meant to keep lines in adjacent columns at the same height.

Tables are a focus of their own: the manual describes table styles, rows and columns, cells spanning several columns and rotated cells. You place graphics in anchored frames that move with the text. For formulas there is a built-in equation feature.

For multilingual content, FrameMaker supports Unicode and Asian languages and, according to the vendor, Arabic, Hebrew and Farsi with right-to-left text, also mixed within the same paragraph. For German texts there is built-in Duden support for spelling and hyphenation.

Adobe does not describe design templates for flyers, posters or social media formats, as design platforms provide them, for FrameMaker. The manual covers templates together with page layout; they bundle formats and master pages for new documents.

Print and digital output

For print, you define colours in the CMYK colour model; RGB and HLS are also available. When printing and saving as PDF, FrameMaker uses the CMYK values according to the help. Colours from libraries are defined as process or spot colours; spot colours are printed as a separate, premixed ink on a plate of their own. As bundled colour libraries, the help names Crayon, DIC, FOCOLTONE, Greyscale, MUNSELL, Online, TOYO and TRUMATCH. PANTONE and HKS are not among them. If your print shop works with such colours, you should clarify in advance how to set them up.

For prepress, FrameMaker offers:

  • Colour separations on screen: you define which colours are visible, knocked out or hidden, and so see individual inks and knockouts.
  • Separations and overprinting: you print colour separations as separate pages. Objects can overprint, and there are settings for trapping.
  • PDF/X and PDF/A: according to the vendor, PDF/X1 to PDF/X4 and PDF/A files are created. The settings come from joboptions files.
  • Marks and bleed: in the dialog for PDF publishing you define the bleed and add crop and registration marks as well as colour bars.

Important for print PDFs: according to the help, the option to convert text and graphic colours to RGB is switched on by default. For a CMYK PDF with marks and bleed you have to switch it off. FrameMaker outputs colours in images as they are.

Neither the help pages checked nor the feature overview describes colour management with ICC profiles and soft proofing or a preflight check in the program; the feature overview only mentions consistent colour output in general terms. In our view, you need an additional tool to check print files.

Digitally, FrameMaker uses the Publish function to output PDF, responsive HTML5, EPUB, Microsoft HTML Help and basic HTML. According to the help, FrameMaker has hidden the Kindle and mobile app options since Update 3 of the September 2022 version; for Kindle the help refers to the EPUB output, while the feature overview still lists Kindle. According to the vendor, FrameMaker creates accessible tagged PDFs in line with Section 508 and PDF 2.0. You can import audio, video and 3D objects in U3D format; according to the help, they are embedded in the output when you publish. Interactive forms in PDF are not described in the help pages checked.

Long documents and automation

Long documents are the core of FrameMaker. You combine several documents in a book file; FrameMaker manages numbering and pagination at book level. Tables of contents, indexes and other lists, for example of figures and tables, are created as generated files from paragraphs or markers. With every update, FrameMaker reads the sources again and keeps the lists current.

For the index you insert index markers, also with subentries, references and page ranges. FrameMaker numbers and places footnotes automatically and moves them to another page when needed. Endnotes appear at the end of a chapter or book, and glossaries are available too. Cross-references point to places in the same or in another document, and in structured documents also to elements.

With conditional text you maintain variants in a single document: passages of text and graphics get condition tags and are shown or hidden depending on the output. This way, for example, manuals for two device variants or for print and web come from the same source. Since the March 2026 version you can bundle variables and condition tags in a book-level template.

For structured authoring, FrameMaker supports XML and DITA. Content rules from a DTD or an XML schema enforce a consistent structure, and authors work either in a WYSIWYG view or in the XML view. For DITA there is a dedicated workspace with DITA maps and publishing also via the DITA Open Toolkit. For the S1000D specification, Adobe offers an application pack.

You can automate with scripts in ExtendScript, a dialect of ECMAScript that resembles JavaScript. You develop your own plug-ins with the Frame Developer Kit (FDK), and there are plug-ins from Adobe partners as well. For scheduled publishing on a server there is the separate product FrameMaker Publishing Server.

The help pages checked do not describe a data merge that creates data-driven layouts from CSV or Excel tables. You can import Excel files, and recurring tasks can be solved with scripts; that is not a ready-made function for business cards or labels.

AI, online services and collaboration

Neither the release notes for the March 2026 version nor the list of fixes for the September 2026 version nor the feature overview names AI tools for writing, translating, generating or editing images. So no AI features are documented for FrameMaker, and therefore no credits or add-on subscriptions for them either. According to the General Terms of Use, Adobe does not train generative AI models on its customers' local or cloud content.

FrameMaker is installed locally. For activation, subscription validation and access to online services you need an internet connection and registration; activation by phone is not possible. According to the FAQ, you do not have to be online permanently after that; the licence is checked over the internet every 30 days. This information comes from a 2022 FAQ; it is not separately confirmed for the 2026 version.

The Adobe pages checked do not describe several people editing the same document at the same time in FrameMaker. What is available:

  • Comments via PDF: you create a PDF, others comment on it, and you import the comments into the source document. According to the help, the online service for this requires a Document Cloud subscription; the feature overview requires a Technical Communication Suite subscription for Acrobat desktop features and online services. This is not included in the FrameMaker individual plan.
  • Tracking text changes, change bars, document comparison and word and character count.
  • Packages: you pack books, DITA maps and documents with all related files as a ZIP file, for sharing or backup.
  • Connections to content management systems: Adobe Experience Manager and Experience Manager Guides, SharePoint Online and OpenText Documentum, plus an integration with Dropbox.

The Technical Communication Suite is a separate subscription with FrameMaker, RoboHelp, Captivate and Acrobat. It is not part of the reference edition.

Adobe does not describe a brand kit with central colours, fonts and logos or locked template elements for FrameMaker. Consistency comes from templates, format catalogues and, for structured documents, structure rules.

Files, exchange and switching

FrameMaker saves documents and books in its own formats. For exchange there is MIF, a text file with FrameMaker instructions that describes text and graphics and also allows exchange with older FrameMaker versions. You can also save as XML, SGML, RTF, HTML or plain text. According to the help, DITA is an open XML standard; in our view, such content can also be reused in other DITA tools, where the layout is created anew.

You can import Word documents in DOC or DOCX format. FrameMaker maps the styles by their names, and you save the settings as a preset for further documents. Word and Markdown files can also be converted to DITA, and you can import Excel files as well. You split large imported documents into chapters based on markers or paragraph formats.

FrameMaker treats PDF files as graphics on import, one page at a time. So you do not edit the text in them in FrameMaker. The help pages checked do not describe importing IDML or INDD files from InDesign.

For translations, you export content as XLIFF and import the translated files back.

You usually give print shops a PDF/X, and colleagues or your archive a package as a ZIP file with all related files. If you later switch to another program, content mainly carries over via XML, DITA or RTF in our view. Adobe names no layout format for FrameMaker that other layout programs open directly.

Who Adobe FrameMaker suits

In our view, Adobe FrameMaker suits you if:

  • you write and maintain manuals, instructions or documentation with many pages and chapters,
  • you want to capture content in a structured way in XML or DITA or move to it,
  • you create variants with conditional text from one source and publish them as PDF, HTML5 and EPUB,
  • you exchange translations via XLIFF or manage content in Experience Manager or SharePoint,
  • you work on Windows and a subscription is fine for you.

In our view, FrameMaker is less suitable if:

  • you want to design flyers, posters, invitations or social media graphics from templates,
  • you work on a Mac, on Linux or in the browser,
  • you are looking for a perpetual licence without ongoing costs,
  • you need to open InDesign files or exchange IDML files with agencies,
  • you want to work on the same document at the same time as others or use AI tools in the program.

Who is Adobe FrameMaker suitable for?

Editorial assessment

  • For beginners and clubs less suited

Design flyers, invitations and club magazines without a long learning curve

According to the vendor, FrameMaker is designed for technical content; Adobe does not describe templates for flyers or invitations. In addition, it requires a subscription and Windows. In our view, this does not suit beginners and clubs.

  • For graphic design and agencies partly suited

Produce and exchange print files for client projects

PDF/X, spot colours, colour separations, overprinting and bleed are available. Not documented are colour management with ICC profiles, a preflight check, PANTONE and HKS libraries and an import of IDML or INDD. In our view, FrameMaker suits agencies mainly when they produce technical documentation.

  • For books, magazines and catalogues partly suited

Typeset and update specialist books, manuals and extensive catalogues

Book files, master pages, paragraph and character styles, linked text frames, table of contents, index, footnotes and EPUB are available. In our view, FrameMaker is less intended for design-heavy magazines and for exchange with InDesign workflows, and it runs on Windows only.

  • For technical writing well suited

Maintain manuals in a structured way and publish them in several formats

Books, cross-references, conditional text, XML and DITA, XLIFF for translations and output as PDF, responsive HTML5, EPUB and Microsoft HTML Help are documented, plus connections to Experience Manager and SharePoint. Limitations: Windows only, subscription only, comments via Acrobat services only with the Technical Communication Suite.

  • For marketing and social media less suited

Create many formats quickly, on brand and as a team

Adobe does not describe social media templates, a brand kit, locked templates, automatic resizing, data-driven layouts or simultaneous editing for FrameMaker. In our view, the program is not intended for marketing and social media teams.

  • Without subscription less suited

Buy once and work locally without ongoing costs

According to Adobe, the current version is no longer available as a one-time purchase, and older perpetual licences have no upgrade path. FrameMaker does run locally, but it requires an active subscription and a regular online licence check.

Conclusion

Adobe FrameMaker is geared to technical documentation. Books made of many documents, automatically updated tables of contents and indexes, footnotes, cross-references, conditional text and structured authoring in XML and DITA are documented in detail, and PDF, responsive HTML5, EPUB and Microsoft HTML Help are created from the same source. You exchange translations via XLIFF and can manage content in Experience Manager or SharePoint if you wish. For print there are PDF/X, spot colours, colour separations, overprinting and bleed; the help, however, does not mention colour management with ICC profiles, a preflight check or PANTONE libraries, and for print PDFs you have to switch off the default conversion to RGB when exporting. FrameMaker runs on Windows 11 only, is only available as a subscription and needs a regular online licence check. Simultaneous team editing and AI features are not documented, and comments via Acrobat services require the Technical Communication Suite. In our view, FrameMaker suits technical writing teams and specialist publishers producing manuals on Windows; it is not intended for flyers, design-heavy magazines or social media graphics.
