Premiere comes to Android
About a year after its launch on iOS, Adobe is bringing its video editing software Premiere to Android smartphones. You can download the Android app for free from the Play Store and use it with basic features. No Adobe account is required to get started.
As already seen on the iPhone, the app does not contain ads or watermarks. This is especially useful when you want to edit short videos directly on your smartphone and then publish them. However, free does not mean that all features are available without limitations: Some tools and services are tied to subscriptions or a limited quota.
What you can edit with the app
At the center is a multi-track timeline where you can combine video, text, music, and effects. For example, you can add text overlays to a clip, add an audio track, and layer multiple visual elements on top of each other. You can also cut footage and adjust its speed.
You can export finished videos with a resolution of up to 4K. For publication on social networks, there is a direct sharing option to TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube Shorts. The app is particularly designed for short, vertical videos, but widescreen format material can also be edited.
Thus, Premiere for Android is aimed at different situations: You can finalize a clip on the go for social media or prepare material on your smartphone. For extensive projects, it is also important which features can be integrated with a desktop workflow – and which subscriptions are needed for that.
As in the iOS version, the Android app integrates features from Adobe Firefly. This includes automatic sound generation, background noise reduction, and the ability to create a video from an image. Such tools can assist in the design but do not replace manual editing: You should check the result and adjust it to your project as needed.
The available AI features are limited in the free use. You only have a certain number of generations available per day. Adobe also uses Generative Credits here, as in the rest of the Adobe system. This means: AI actions are charged against a credit balance, the amount of which depends on the respective plan.
With a Pro subscription for around 80 euros per year or 9 euros per month, your account, according to the stated conditions, receives 1,200 credits per month. Therefore, if you frequently use Firefly features, you should not only pay attention to the price of the subscription but also to how many generations you actually need.
What an additional subscription costs
Not all features that are important for a seamless workflow are included in the free usage. This includes cloud synchronization: If you want to sync content between your smartphone and a desktop device, you will need a paid cloud subscription.
A subscription is also required for editing on the desktop that connects the mobile and desktop applications. This model costs around 26 euros. So you should clarify in advance whether you want to use Premiere only on the smartphone or if you plan to work on your projects later on the computer.
For simple editing on the phone, the free feature set may be sufficient. However, as soon as you want to synchronize files across devices or regularly work on the desktop, additional costs will come into play. Therefore, the mobile app is not automatically a free replacement for a complete desktop workflow.
Planned expansions
Adobe is planning further features for the app. These include Adobe Fonts, improved subtitles, and keyframes. In the future, it should also be possible to continue editing in Premiere on the desktop.
Until these expansions are available, the Android version is particularly interesting for mobile projects: You can cut clips, add audio and effects, and export them directly from your smartphone. For longer works or switching between mobile devices and computers, you should consider the subscription and cloud conditions in your decision.
