What is a mandala?

Mandalas are motifs that are aligned around a center. The shapes can be based on geometric surfaces and the appearance of plants or figures. The term "mandala" comes from Sanskrit and roughly means "circle". The form of representation itself originates from religion - for example for the symbolic visualization of landscapes and deities (Hinduism, Buddhism). In this use, they are sometimes also said to have a meditative effect. Today, mandalas are also used for other purposes such as coloring books.
