Midjourney is testing fast models and new style previews on alpha.midjourney.com. Furthermore, the company reports improvements in the edit model and tile function for V8.1 and V8.2. The innovations have not been confirmed as generally available.

Compare styles before generation

In the styles sidebar, you can see how your current prompt looks with favored and highlighted styles with live previews enabled. A click on a preview starts the generation with the selected style. Midjourney refers to the fast models in the interface as an experiment.

The preview thus provides an opportunity to view different styles for the same prompt before you choose one for generation. It is part of the testing offer on alpha.midjourney.com; Midjourney does not mention general availability.

More targeted changes with the edit model

According to Midjourney, inpainting and outpainting with the edit model have also been improved. With targeted changes, only the selected image pixels are to be altered. This is intended to allow for more control and enable repeated edits without quality loss.

Tiles for V8.1 and V8.2

The tile function --tile has been revised by Midjourney for V8.1 and V8.2. Where previously visible seams could occur between tiles, the transitions are now supposed to blend seamlessly into one another.

What the changes mean in practice

For you, the style previews can make it easier to compare variations: You can see how a prompt works in different favored or highlighted styles and can continue generating directly with a preview. When editing, the change aims to adjust selected areas specifically without altering other image pixels. Those using --tile with V8.1 or V8.2 are expected to benefit from smoother transitions between the tiles. It should be noted that the style previews are currently running as an experiment on alpha.midjourney.com; concerning the tiles, Midjourney explicitly mentions V8.1 and V8.2.
