GL Graphics & layout PR Print & prepress

Use cases

Design logos, illustrations, flyers, brochures, signs, packaging and other print products, with vector graphics and page layout in the same program. Create print-ready PDFs with CMYK, Pantone colours, PDF/X, preflight and bleed and output colour separations. Create series such as business cards, postcards, invitations or certificates from Excel, CSV or text data with images and QR codes. Edit photos in Corel PHOTO-PAINT and convert bitmaps into vectors with PowerTRACE. Since version 2026, generate images and vector graphics with AI in exchange for credits.

Our assessment

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite combines vector graphics, page layout and image editing with extensive prepress features and print merge with image and QR code fields. For multi-page documents there are master layers, styles and linked text frames; Corel does not describe features for long documents or exchange in InDesign format. In our view, it suits graphics and print products, especially if you are looking for a perpetual licence instead of a subscription.

Strengths

  • Besides the subscription there is a perpetual licence that, according to Corel, you may use without time limit as long as operating systems and devices support it.[2][5]
  • For print files there is PDF/X export, a preflight check, bleed, colour separations and an on-screen simulation of overprinting.[14][20][21][18][19]
  • For multi-page documents there are master layers for all, even or odd pages, paragraph and character styles, text frames linked across pages and a baseline grid.[8][9][10][11]
  • Print merge takes data from text, CSV and Excel files (XLSX) or ODBC sources and fills fields for text, images and QR codes.[25][26]
  • CorelDRAW opens PDF files as editable documents; text can stay editable as text, and layers and comments are kept.[22]
  • According to Corel, your work and images are not used to train AI models, including the third-party models.[2][30]
  • According to Corel, Pantone colour palettes can be used in CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT at no extra cost.[2]

Weaknesses

  • According to Corel, the perpetual licence lacks many subscriber features, including CorelDRAW Web and monthly AI credits; the commenting tools are only available for an extra fee.[2]
  • According to Corel, with the perpetual licence you have to buy new major versions at the full price.[5]
  • The perpetual licence includes a one-time allocation of 2,000 AI credits; once they are used up, you buy more credits for generative AI.[4][2]
  • In our view, CorelDRAW is not well suited for exchanging files with InDesign, because the format list names neither IDML nor INDD. Editorial assessment
  • In our view, the suite is only of limited use for books and manuals, because the help describes no table of contents, index or footnotes. Editorial assessment
  • Collaboration here means that clients and colleagues view and comment on your designs in the browser, with the perpetual licence only for an extra charge; Corel does not describe simultaneous editing.[2]

Edition, version and price

The reference edition in this comparison is the perpetual licence of CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 for one seat. Corel offers the suite in three models: as a subscription with monthly or annual payment, as a perpetual licence for use without time limit and as a licence with a maintenance plan that you pay for annually. Calculated over three years, the perpetual licence is cheaper than the annual subscription according to Corel's prices, which is why it is the focus here. You can find the amounts under “All plans”.

The suite includes CorelDRAW for vector graphics and page layout, Corel PHOTO-PAINT for image editing and Corel Font Manager for managing fonts. CorelDRAW Web, the browser version, is only available with a subscription and for customers with active maintenance. Monthly AI credits, additional templates and brushes and the commenting tools are also part of the subscription. The perpetual licence gets a one-time allocation of 2,000 AI credits and the commenting tools only for an extra fee. According to Corel, it lacks many features, applications and workflows that subscribers and maintenance customers can use.

The current version 2026 was released in March 2026 as version 27.0. Updates followed in July 2026 (27.1) and on 14 September 2026 (27.2), each for Windows, Macs with Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Among other things, update 27.2 added an AI feature that creates vector graphics from a text description. In that update, the help only marks the additions to CorelDRAW Web as exclusive to subscribers and maintenance customers. Corel also runs beta programs; beta features do not count in this comparison.

On Windows you need the 64-bit version of Windows 10 or 11 and a processor from Intel or AMD. The technical specifications do not mention Windows on ARM. On the Mac, Corel supports macOS 14 to 27 on Macs with Apple Silicon or with an Intel processor with AVX2. Corel names no Linux version and no iPad app for the suite. According to Corel, the interface is available in German, among other languages, and so is the help for version 2026.

You need an internet connection for installation and authentication. According to the licence terms, you may install the software on up to two of your own devices but use it on only one of them at a time. According to Corel, you may use the perpetual licence at no extra cost as long as operating systems, devices and technologies support it. For the next major version you pay the full price. According to the English licence terms, a subscription renews automatically unless you object at least 30 days before it expires; after it ends you have to uninstall the software. If you cancel a licence with maintenance, by contrast, you keep the version you received last.

Layout and typography

CorelDRAW is primarily a vector graphics program, but it also lays out multi-page documents. When you create a document, you choose the page size, the number of pages and the primary colour mode. For folded print products there are layout styles such as book, booklet, tent card, horizontal and vertical folded card and leporello, which divide the page into equal parts. You can view one page or several pages at once.

You place recurring elements on master layers. They sit on a virtual master page that every new file gets and apply to all pages, only to even pages or only to odd pages. This approach differs from classic DTP programs with several named master pages. You insert page numbers on a master layer and choose from various number styles.

For text there is artistic text for single lines and paragraph text in frames. Paragraph text frames can be linked, also across pages, so that the text flows from frame to frame. Frames can have columns, and the baseline grid lets you align lines across several frames. There are styles for paragraphs, characters and text frames as well as for outlines and fills. If you change a style, all objects that use it are updated. Styles can be combined into style sets and exported and imported as style sheets.

For typography, CorelDRAW supports OpenType features, variable fonts, hyphenation, tabs and indents, numbered and bulleted lists and drop caps. You draw tables directly, convert paragraph text into a table or import tables from a text file or a spreadsheet. According to the version comparison, more than 1,700 font families from Google Fonts are available as remote fonts, and Corel Font Manager manages your font library.

As a starting point, the suite offers more than 200 templates according to Corel; subscribers get more than 600 more. You edit photos in Corel PHOTO-PAINT, and PowerTRACE converts bitmaps into vectors.

Print and digital output

For print files, the suite offers the tools that print shops usually ask for. You create documents in the primary colour mode CMYK or RGB and choose default profiles for RGB, CMYK and greyscale. Colour management assigns colour profiles, converts between them and uses soft proofing to show on screen how the document will look on a specific output device. In a safe CMYK workflow, CMYK colour values are kept by default when you export and print. According to Corel, Pantone colour palettes are included in CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT at no extra cost.

When exporting to PDF, you can choose presets such as prepress, PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3, according to the version comparison also PDF/X-4, plus PDF/A for archiving. Before saving, the preflight check examines the document for possible problems. For the print shop you set a bleed and add crop marks, registration marks and file information.

You print colour separations directly from CorelDRAW and specify which separations are output and in which order. You can convert spot colours to process colours without changing the file itself. The display modes “Enhanced” and “Simulate overprints” show on screen how overprinted colours mix. Further tools include imposition layouts, trapping, OPI links and printing to film.

The suite offers less for digital output. Exported PDFs can contain hyperlinks, bookmarks and thumbnails, and embedded 3D models stay interactive in the PDF. Form fields, buttons or video in PDFs are not described in the PDF topics of the help. The list of supported file formats for version 2026 does not name EPUB or HTML export either. For websites and social media you export graphics, for example as PNG, WebP or SVG.

Long documents and automation

In our view, CorelDRAW is only of limited use for books, manuals and long catalogues. The checked help pages for version 2026 describe page numbers and master layers, but no automatic table of contents, index, footnotes, cross-references or book files made of several documents, no conditional text and no XML structure. Whether there are workarounds, for example with macros, is not verified here. In our view, you are better off typesetting long publications in a DTP or authoring program.

Print merge, on the other hand, is well developed. You connect a drawing to a data source, such as a text file, a CSV file, an Excel workbook in XLSX format or an ODBC data source. In the form document you insert fields for text, images and QR codes; CorelDRAW fetches images via file paths from a column of the table, for example for logos or photos. You print the result directly or save it as a new document that you can still adjust before printing. This is how you create business cards, certificates, postcards or invitations in series, for example.

For recurring tasks there are macros. You record them or write them in VBA or VSTA. The macro features are installed by default; for the VSTA editor you also need Microsoft Visual Studio 2019. This information comes from the Windows help; whether and how macros run on the Mac is not verified here. Corel also runs a developer area with a programming guide and an object model reference.

In the Get More dialog you download applications, plug-ins and content packs such as fills, images and fonts. Some of them are free, others are paid, and the selection changes continuously.

AI, online services and collaboration

With version 2026, Corel built generative AI into CorelDRAW and Corel PHOTO-PAINT. In the AI generation docker you create images from a text description or remix an existing image according to your prompt, for example to change elements or the surroundings. Since update 27.2, the AI also creates editable vector graphics from text, and quick AI generation in the File menu delivers drafts with few settings. In addition, there is AI-assisted background removal with one click and, in Corel PHOTO-PAINT, AI masking that creates a mask or clip mask from the subject. The version comparison also lists older AI tools such as upsampling, JPEG artefact removal and art style effects.

According to Corel, the generative features use third-party AI models and run via an AI server, so you need an internet connection for them. Each generation uses a certain number of AI credits depending on the selected model, and the credits are tied to your Corel account. The perpetual licence includes a one-time allocation of 2,000 credits that do not expire. Subscribers and maintenance customers receive 2,000 credits every month, reset at the start of the month. You buy more credits as a pack or as an add-on subscription. Corel does not say on the checked pages whether background removal, AI masking and the older AI tools use credits or run locally.

On training, Corel says that your work and images are not used to train AI models, including the third-party models. According to Corel, the generative AI features can be switched off during installation for business and education licences.

Without internet, you keep working with the desktop programs after installation and authentication. According to Corel, you need internet for some components, online features and content. Corel does not say whether the perpetual licence checks the licence online again later.

Corel does not describe several people editing the same document at the same time. With the collaboration tools, clients and colleagues view your designs and add comments and annotations, and you are notified by email. These tools are available with a subscription and with maintenance, and for the perpetual licence only for an extra fee. Since update 27.2 you sign in once and reach cloud documents, the comments docker and your assets. A brand kit with centrally stored brand colours, fonts and logos or locked template elements are not described on the checked vendor pages; however, symbol libraries can be stored in the cloud and shared with others.

Files, exchange and switching

CorelDRAW saves in its own CDR format. PDF is the usual way to pass files to print shops, also as PDF/X. Alternatively, you print to a file that the print service provider sends directly to its output device. If the print shop itself works with CorelDRAW, according to the help you can also give it the original files.

The suite imports a wide range of formats. You open PDF files as CorelDRAW documents. You take over text as editable text or as curves, and layers from files created with Acrobat 6 or later and comments are kept. You import Word documents in DOC or DOCX format and RTF files with or without fonts and formatting. According to the help, however, objects, graphs and equations, for example, are lost, and nested tables are not fully supported. Other formats include Adobe Illustrator (AI), Photoshop (PSD), SVG, EPS, AutoCAD (DWG and DXF), Microsoft Publisher (PUB), Visio, WebP, HEIF and camera RAW formats.

There is no direct way to exchange files with InDesign: IDML and INDD are not in the list of supported file formats for version 2026, and Corel does not name an IDML export either. You therefore take over layouts from InDesign as PDF, for example, and pass on layouts from CorelDRAW as PDF, AI, EPS or SVG. For Adobe Illustrator, the help recommends AI or PDF.

When you switch to another program, it needs an import for CDR, or you export beforehand to an open format such as PDF or SVG. You can export styles as a style sheet; whether other programs read this file is not verified here. For the perpetual licence: according to Corel, you may keep using the purchased version as long as operating systems, devices and technologies support it. Corel only promises ongoing support for future operating systems for subscriptions and maintenance.

Who CorelDRAW Graphics Suite suits

In our view, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite suits you if:

  • you design logos, illustrations, signs, packaging or promotional material and want vector graphics and page layout in the same program,
  • you need print-ready files with CMYK, Pantone colours, PDF/X, preflight and bleed,
  • you create series from Excel or CSV data, for example business cards with photos or QR codes,
  • you prefer to buy once rather than take out a subscription and work on Windows or macOS,
  • you typeset flyers, brochures and shorter magazines with master layers, styles and linked text frames.

In our view, it is less suitable if:

  • you typeset books, manuals or long catalogues with tables of contents, an index and footnotes,
  • you regularly exchange files in InDesign format with agencies or publishers,
  • you want to create e-books or interactive PDFs with forms,
  • you want to work on the same document at the same time as others or lock brand templates centrally for a team,
  • you work on Linux or need an iPad app.

Who is CorelDRAW Graphics Suite suitable for?

Editorial assessment

  • For beginners and clubs partly suited

Design flyers, invitations and club magazines with templates

German interface, more than 200 templates, print PDFs with bleed and a perpetual licence without a subscription. In our view, however, the large feature set and the prepress terminology require more learning than simple design programs, and the perpetual licence is a larger purchase.

  • For graphic design and agencies partly suited

Produce print files, logos and client projects

CMYK documents, colour management with soft proofing, Pantone palettes, PDF/X, preflight, colour separations and overprint simulation cover prepress, plus vector graphics and image editing in one suite. The format list does not name exchange in InDesign format, so you mostly exchange files with agencies and print shops as PDF.

  • For books, magazines and catalogues partly suited

    Typeset brochures and shorter magazines

Master layers, paragraph and character styles, text frames linked across pages, a baseline grid, page numbers and tables are available. The help does not describe a table of contents, index, footnotes or EPUB export; in our view the suite is therefore not well suited for books and extensive catalogues.

  • For technical writing less suited

    Maintain manuals and technical documentation

A book function, cross-references, conditional text and XML or DITA structures are not described in the help for version 2026, and neither is HTML output. CorelDRAW can serve for individual technical illustrations, but in our view not for maintaining the documentation itself.

  • For marketing and social media partly suited

Create promotional material and series quickly and consistently

Print merge fills layouts from Excel or CSV data with text, images and QR codes, and AI creates images and vector graphics in exchange for credits. A brand kit and locked templates are not documented, and the commenting tools for the team are only available with a subscription, with maintenance or for an extra fee.

  • Without subscription well suited

    Buy once and work locally

According to Corel, you may use the perpetual licence without time limit, and the desktop programs run locally after installation and authentication. New major versions cost the full price, CorelDRAW Web and monthly AI credits are only available with a subscription, and generative AI needs internet and credits.

Conclusion

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2026 is above all a graphics program that also lays out pages. For print products it offers the tools that print shops usually ask for: CMYK documents, colour management with soft proofing, Pantone palettes, PDF/X, a preflight check, bleed, colour separations and an overprint simulation. Print merge with Excel, CSV and ODBC data and fields for images and QR codes suits business cards, invitations and other series. For multi-page documents there are master layers for all, even or odd pages, paragraph and character styles, linked text frames and a baseline grid. The help, however, does not describe a table of contents, index, footnotes, book files or EPUB export, and IDML or INDD are missing from the format list. New in version 2026 is generative AI for images and, since update 27.2, also for vector graphics; it runs via an AI server with third-party models, uses credits and, according to Corel, is not trained on your work. The reference here is the perpetual licence, which is cheaper than the annual subscription over three years. It lacks CorelDRAW Web, monthly AI credits and other content for subscribers, though, the commenting tools are only available for an extra fee, and the next major version costs the full price. In our view, the suite suits graphic design, sign making and print products up to brochures and shorter magazines, less so books, technical documentation and file exchange with InDesign.
