Use cases
WordPress websites, blogs and company sites with their own domain and email; small technical projects with SSH and cron jobs; from Webhosting 4000 upwards also applications with Node.js, Python or Ruby.
Our assessment
netcup web hosting suits a WordPress website with domain and email if you handle maintenance yourself. Plus points are the fixed prices over the term, SSH and the WordPress Toolkit even in the entry-level plan and the data processing agreement in the customer control panel. The provider's backups are voluntary, a restore costs extra, and the entry-level plan has tight PHP limits.
For the reference project, this comparison looks at Webhosting 1000 with the Nuremberg location (NUE), netcup's entry-level plan. According to the product page, it includes a .de domain, unlimited free SSL certificates, SSH access and 100 email addresses. A WordPress website with email can be run with it without mandatory extras. There is no setup fee.
The minimum term is 12 months; according to the product page, billing is 12 months in advance. After the minimum term, the contract can be cancelled with one month's notice to the end of the month according to the T&Cs.
netcup does not work with an introductory price that rises after the first year: according to the provider, the prices of the web hosting packages apply for the entire term. In its T&Cs, however, netcup reserves the right to change prices at the start of a new billing period with six weeks' notice. You can then cancel as of the date of the change.
You choose the location when ordering, and each variant has its own product page. This comparison uses the prices of the Nuremberg variant. Extras that cost money include a restore from netcup's backups and additional domains. If you need more storage, more PHP memory or the Backup Manager, Webhosting 2000 is the next step.
You install WordPress at netcup via the app installer, which according to the provider also handles automatic updates. According to the product page, even Webhosting 1000 includes the WordPress Toolkit, and the web hosting is managed via Plesk. The plans are classic web hosting: you take care of caching, plugins and security settings yourself.
Technically, even the entry-level plan offers SSH, Git and one cron job, and PHP versions 7.2 to 8.5 are available. In the entry-level plan, however, the memory_limit is 128 MB, uploads are limited to 8 MB, and netcup only states guaranteed usable RAM from Webhosting 2000 upwards. There, the memory_limit rises to 512 MB. Python, Node.js and Ruby on Rails are only available from Webhosting 4000 upwards.
Webhosting 1000 has 25 GB of SSD storage for the web, another 25 GB for email and one database. In our view, that is enough for a single, lean WordPress site. With many plugins or large uploads, you are more likely to hit the PHP limits of the entry-level plan; for several projects or a shop, one of the larger plans is a better fit.
According to the help centre, netcup creates daily backups of the web hosting packages. Websites, emails and databases with files up to 10 GB are backed up and kept for up to 7 days. This is explicitly done on a voluntary basis: according to the T&Cs, netcup does not back up customer content unless specifically agreed, and you are responsible for your own backup copies. You order a restore for a fee on the netcup website and then contact support; you are only charged if data is available.
From Webhosting 2000 upwards, you can use the Backup Manager to create one-off or regular backups yourself, including to an external FTP server. Emails are not included because the mail and web servers run separately. In our view, you should plan your own backup in the entry-level plan, for example via a WordPress plugin.
netcup protects the customer control panel with two-factor authentication. A code by email is the default; an authenticator app is recommended. You conclude a data processing agreement in the customer control panel under master data; there are no extra fees with netcup's template.
According to the company, netcup operates infrastructure in Nuremberg, Vienna and Amsterdam as well as in Manassas (USA) and Singapore. For web hosting, you choose between Nuremberg, Vienna and Manassas when ordering. If your data is to stay in Germany, choose the Nuremberg location (code NUE). netcup GmbH is based in Karlsruhe and, according to the company, has been part of the Austrian Anexia Group since 2016.
Webhosting 1000 includes a .de domain. According to the plan overview, you can choose an alternative domain instead, such as .at, .eu, .com or .org; the selection may vary depending on location and plan. The number rises in the larger plans: Webhosting 2000 has three .de domains, Webhosting 4000 six.
Email is included in the plan: according to the product page, Webhosting 1000 offers 100 email addresses with 25 GB of storage in total, IMAP and POP3, webmail with Sieve filters and spam and virus filters. Sending limits apply per domain per hour and per day.
According to netcup, you can reach support by ticket, by email Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and by phone Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outside these hours, netcup lists an emergency number for technical outages, plus a chatbot. On its support page, netcup currently points out significantly longer processing times due to high support volume (as of 13 October 2026). These details say nothing about quality in an individual case.
In our view, netcup web hosting suits freelancers, associations and small companies that want to run a WordPress website with domain and email at fixed prices over the term and maintain WordPress themselves. If you work technically, you get SSH, Git and one cron job even in the entry-level plan; for Python, Node.js or Ruby you need Webhosting 4000.
netcup is less suitable if you want to rely on the provider's backups or expect managed WordPress with staging and support. The backups are voluntary, a restore costs extra, and the Backup Manager is only available from Webhosting 2000 upwards. If you plan many client projects, netcup's reseller plans are worth a look.
Webhosting 1000 is enough for the reference project. If you need more storage, more PHP memory, several domains or the Backup Manager, Webhosting 2000 is the sensible next step.
Editorial assessment
For beginners and clubs partly suited
First website with included domain and email
Domain, email, SSL and WordPress via the app installer are part of the entry-level plan. However, management is split between the customer control panel and Plesk, phone support is only available on weekdays during the day, and you have to take care of your own backups.
For freelancers and small businesses partly suited
Company website with email and a data processing agreement
A data processing agreement in the customer control panel, email on your own domain, two-factor authentication and fixed prices over the term fit. However, the provider's backups are voluntary according to the T&Cs, a restore costs extra, and the Backup Manager does not back up emails.
For WordPress without the tech work less suited
WordPress without your own maintenance work
netcup offers classic web hosting, not managed WordPress. According to the provider, automatic WordPress updates run via the app installer, plus the WordPress Toolkit. You take care of caching and reliable backups yourself; netcup does not describe a staging feature.
For agencies and freelancers partly suited
Several client websites in one package
The larger plans come with more domains, databases and guaranteed RAM. For client projects with their own management, netcup has separate reseller plans; rights for clients and teams as well as staging are not described for the plan considered.
For developers partly suited
Use your own tools via SSH and cron jobs
SSH, Git and one cron job are available even in the entry-level plan, plus PHP up to 8.5. The larger plans offer more cron jobs and PHP memory; Python, Node.js and Ruby on Rails are only included from Webhosting 4000 upwards.
netcup web hosting is classic web hosting without an introductory discount: according to the provider, prices apply for the entire term, and the minimum term is 12 months. Even Webhosting 1000 with the Nuremberg location includes a .de domain, 100 email addresses, SSL certificates, SSH and the WordPress Toolkit and covers the reference project. Data protection and access protection are solidly handled, with a data processing agreement in the customer control panel and two-factor authentication. In our view, the weak points are the backups and the PHP limits in the entry-level plan: netcup backs up daily, but voluntarily and for up to 7 days, a restore costs extra, the Backup Manager is only available from Webhosting 2000 upwards, and the memory_limit is 128 MB. If you maintain WordPress yourself and set up your own backup, netcup suits a website, blog or small company site. If you are looking for managed WordPress or backups with a commitment, specialised offers in this comparison are a better fit.
