Paper Fish Craft: Step-by-Step Instructions with Photos and Comments
For this craft tutorial and all our other guides, we strive to use only materials that are already in every household or easily available at the nearest store. For our paper fish, you only need a few basic crafting supplies.
What you need for the paper fish:
- Colored paper (ideally in different colors for the fish and mouth)
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Ruler
- Glue
- Black marker
- Optional: black googly eyes for sticking on
Step 1: Prepare the square
First, cut yourself a square sheet. If you already have pre-made square origami paper, you can move directly to the next step.

Step 2: Basic folding and marking
Fold the sheet diagonally. Then fold both edges toward the center. Unfold the sheet again and draw pencil lines from the diagonal to the crease. You will later need to cut along these lines with scissors.

Step 3: Cutting out and decorating
Now do a bit of work with the scissors. After that, you can paint the fish and draw its scales. Take a pen and draw a wavy line on one side. You will then need to cut along this line to shape the edge.

Step 4: Shaping the fish form
Glue the bottom together. This will be the fish’s belly. Also cut out fins and a tongue to be attached to the fish with glue.

Step 5: Finishing
Glue on the eyes and you're done! Look at what a great fish you've created!

Crafting with Kids: Paper Fish and Creative Development
Crafting paper fish is a wonderful activity to promote children's creative and motor skills. While they're cutting, folding, and gluing, they train their fine motor skills and learn patient, focused work. The artistic design of the fish with their own patterns and colors stimulates imagination and makes children proud of their self-made creations.
This craft is also excellent for talking with kids about sea animals, aquatic habitats, and environmental conservation. You can think together about different fish species, where they live, and how important it is to keep waters clean.
The project can also be wonderfully expanded: why not craft a whole underwater world together with various fish, seahorses, jellyfish, and starfish? Arranged on a blue background, you'll get a colorful sea panorama that also makes a great wall decoration for the kids' room.
