Bouncing Origami Spider: Step-by-Step Guide with Photos and Comments

In this crafting project, as with all others, we try to use only materials that are available in every household or can be found in the nearest store. For our bouncing origami spider, you only need a square piece of paper and scissors. White paper is best so that you can paint the spider nicely later.

A handy tip: This origami spider is a little more challenging than other crafts. Children under 8 may need help with some steps. Pay special attention to ensuring that all folds are made precisely so that the spider can actually jump at the end.

Materials Needed:

  • Square paper (or A4 paper to cut)
  • Scissors
  • Black pen or marker for decoration
  • Patience and concentration

Origami Spider, Step 1: Prepare the Paper

I start by cutting a square piece from an A4 sheet of paper. I do this because I don’t have any special origami paper on hand at the moment. If you already have square paper, you can skip this step.

Origami Spider, Step 2: The Basic Folds

Next, we fold the square sheet along both diagonals as well as horizontally and vertically in the middle. These crease lines are important for the subsequent steps.

Origami Spider, Step 3: Shape the Main Body

Now you need to fold the sheet so that after tucking the corners inward, you get a square. This step requires a bit of practice – take a good look at the photo.

Origami Spider, Step 4: Prepare the Legs

Next, you need to fold each side towards the center one by one. Watch how I do this in the video. In the end, you will have the body of the spider on top and the legs underneath.

Origami Spider, Step 5: Fold the Legs Thinner

Now we make the legs thinner. To do this, fold each leg in half so that it is only half as wide.

Origami Spider, Step 6: From Four to Eight Legs

Now it’s time to use the scissors! With careful cuts, we split the four legs so that our spider ends up with eight legs, just like a real spider.

Origami Spider, Step 7: The Final Details

Finally, we bend the legs so that the spider really looks like a spider. Then you can draw patterns on the body and legs with a black pen. Your bouncing origami spider is ready! Gently press on its back, and it will jump into the air!

Bouncing Origami Spider and Development of Fine Motor Skills in Children

Folding a bouncing origami spider is not only an entertaining pastime, but it also offers numerous benefits for your child's development. While folding origami, children train their dexterity and fine motor skills, which in turn improves their handwriting and overall dexterity. Additionally, precise folding enhances concentration and spatial thinking.

The challenge of folding a bouncing spider also teaches children perseverance and problem-solving skills. When the spider actually jumps at the end, it’s a wonderful sense of achievement that boosts their self-confidence. This project is perfect for showing children that effort and patience pay off.
