Origami Whistle: Step-by-Step Guide with Photos and Comments
For this crafting idea and all others, we try to use only materials that are available in every household or can be easily obtained at the next store. For this origami whistle, you really only need a rectangular sheet of paper and scissors to make the cut in the middle.
For a well-functioning whistle, we recommend regular printer paper or lightweight origami paper (80-100g/m²). Paper that is too thick is hard to fold and does not produce a good sound, while paper that is too thin may not be stable enough. Red paper like in the photo looks particularly nice, but of course, you can use any color you like.
An important safety note for parents: Make sure that children under 3 years old use this whistle only under supervision, as it may become wet and tear with intensive use. Also, show the children that they should not blow too hard into the whistle to avoid dizziness.
Materials:
- A rectangular sheet of paper (about 15 x 10 cm is ideal)
- Scissors

Origami Whistle and Discovering Sound and Acoustics
This simple Origami Whistle is not only a fun crafting project but also offers a wonderful opportunity to talk to children about sound and acoustics. When air is blown through the narrow gap of the whistle, it creates vibrations and thereby a sound - a simple physical principle that children will find fascinating.
You can experiment together: What happens if you fold the whistle differently or make the cut in a different place? Does the sound change if you use paper of different thicknesses? Such small experiments encourage scientific thinking and curiosity in children. Plus, it's simply fun to have a self-made instrument!
