In Germanic settlements, the village square played a central role: here people met, stored grain, and traded supplies. Children often helped gather berries or feed the animals – chickens chirped happily around, while pigs sniffed in the freshly thrown straw. Storage barrels were usually filled with roasted grain or dried meat, as families had to stock up for the winter. The houses were made of timber framing, thickly plastered with clay, and offered space for large families. Clothing was made from woven wool and linen, with colors ranging from natural tones to simply dyed fabrics.
