Workshop life of the Renaissance: brushes, paint pots, and young helpers

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the studio was a place of learning where apprentices, often including children, were practically involved in the painting process. As helpers, they sorted brushes, cleaned pots, and prepared pigments before the master entered the canvas. This activity not only trained their motor skills but also imparted a sense of material and color.

Brushes in the Renaissance often consisted of bristles from pigs or fine animal hairs, such as from squirrels or martens. Depending on the shape and hardness, they were suitable for different techniques – from fine details to bold brush strokes. The children learned to handle narrow flat brushes, round designing brushes, and wide filbert brushes properly.

The paint pots were also central to the results. Many pigments came from natural sources: ultramarine blue came from lapis lazuli, vibrant red from vermilion or carmine. Ochre provided warm yellow tones, and the painters relied on earthy minerals for green. The helpers often mixed the pigments with egg, oil, or resin to achieve the desired consistency.

This scene reflects the collaboration of generations: young hands prepared everything so that the master could implement his ideas.
