For years, Google has dominated the search landscape in Germany. Companies consistently align their marketing strategies with the algorithms of the tech giant in order to remain visible online. But digital information search is undergoing change. ChatGPT in particular, and similar AI-based tools, are changing the way we search for and process information. In this article, we take a look at how OpenAI is influencing the organic search industry in Germany in the long term.

When do we use search engines

Organic Search in Germany in 2025

The German search engine landscape will also be largely dominated by Google in 2025. According to StatCounter, around 87.24% of search queries in Germany went to Google, while the remaining market share is split between smaller search engines such as Bing (5.73 %) and Yandex (approx. 2.82 %).

More than 53 % of all website traffic comes from organic search, which continues to make search engine optimization (SEO) one of the most important disciplines in digital marketing. At its core, SEO is about "understanding" search engines and strategically using their ranking criteria to direct more users to your own website through organic search results. In addition, organic search plays a crucial role because it is generally more cost-effective than paid advertising and offers long-term visibility.

The Rise of OpenAI

With the success of ChatGPT, OpenAI has proven how powerful generative AI already is. From content creation to designing a website with AI, there are hardly any limits to creativity.

A crucial difference from the classic search engine: While Google provides a multitude of links, ChatGPT directly delivers an answer in understandable language. 43 % of active users already use ChatGPT today as an alternative to Google and other search engines.

The markets are reacting: Microsoft is already integrating OpenAI technology into Bing. Other platforms such as Perplexity rely on similar models. Even Google is countering with its own AI, "Gemini".

Since the emergence of AI, content must be understandable and usable not only for search engines but also for AI systems. In the near future, companies and marketers face the challenge of rethinking their SEO strategies.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) – the Counterpart to SEO

There are already first approaches and terms surrounding the topic of Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), even though the field is still relatively young. This refers to the targeted optimization of content, websites, and brand presences so that they are better recognized and understood by AI systems and used in answers – similar to classic search engine optimization for Google.

Example: A company in the solar technology sector answers clearly structured questions on its website such as "How much electricity does a solar system save?" or "How does an inverter work?"  This content can then be processed and referenced by AI models.

Keyword Analysis and Semantic Search

While classic SEO tools analyze keywords, OpenAI relies on semantic understanding. The AI recognizes connections between terms, intentions, and questions. This results in smarter content strategies that are based not only on search volume but also on user intent.

Anyone who used to optimize for "best camera 2025" now expands the content to include topics such as "low-light performance", "battery life" or "vlogging suitability", because ChatGPT often includes these aspects even if users do not explicitly search for them.

Using AI to Improve User Experience (UX)

OpenAI can also be used to improve the user experience – both directly in search and on your own website:

  • Chatbots for consulting and support
  • Personalized product recommendations
  • Dynamic content adaptation based on user behavior

Companies that want to learn more about the practical use of AI in web design will find helpful tips in this tutorial on AI-supported website design. This makes it possible to create interactive, dialogue-based experiences that have a positive effect on usability and visibility.

AI-Supported Content: From Reactive to Proactive SEO

Another paradigm shift brought about by OpenAI concerns strategy development in content marketing. While in the past the response was often to new search trends, seasonal topics, or competitors, AI now enables a proactive planning approach.

By using language models, it is possible to predict questions that users might ask in the future. For example, which search terms will become relevant when new legislation comes into force, or how product search will change due to technological developments. ChatGPT helps to simulate these scenarios and to plan content strategically in advance.

Competitive Advantages for SMEs: Automated Content Production

Especially for SMEs that have only limited budgets for SEO agencies or in-house marketing, OpenAI offers a new approach to content production. With relatively little effort, professional content can be created automatically, for example for product descriptions, blog posts, or landing pages.

What matters here: quality over quantity. Anyone who feeds ChatGPT specifically with well-formulated prompts, clear target group addressing, and a clean structure can achieve results that are hardly distinguishable from editorially created texts – provided that a final human quality check takes place.

Challenges in Germany and Europe

The integration of OpenAI into search habits is not without hurdles in Germany and Europe. Especially in comparison to the USA, there are several regional particularities that make it harder for ChatGPT to break through as a true Google alternative.

Data Protection and GDPR

Europe is a world leader when it comes to data protection. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) sets high requirements for every type of data processing – including by AI systems. Anyone who uses a search engine or an AI model like ChatGPT to obtain information provides personal inputs (e.g., location, intentions, interests).

It is often still unclear:

  • What data does OpenAI store and for how long?
  • Are the inputs used for training?
  • Is the data processing compatible with European standards?

For many companies, this is an obstacle. Sensitivity is particularly high in the B2B or healthcare sector, while Google, despite criticism, is often perceived as the "lesser evil" because many of its services now offer GDPR-compliant options.

Lack of Transparency and Source Citations

One of the biggest challenges for using ChatGPT as a search alternative is the lack of traceability of the information. While classic search engines provide links to concrete sources, ChatGPT is based on a language model that does not provide direct source references unless explicitly asked – and even then the error rate is very high.

This has the following consequences:

  • Information verification becomes more difficult
  • False information can go unnoticed
  • Trust is harder to build

Especially in Germany, where there are high standards for journalistic quality and source criticism, this is a significant disadvantage compared to classic search engines.

Cultural and Linguistic Barriers

German is not only a complex language but also a culture with high expectations of accuracy, formality, and seriousness. Chatbots that were trained in English and then translated often miss the right tone – especially in a professional context.

OpenAI has made great progress in localization. Nevertheless, the challenge remains: Can an AI truly grasp cultural nuances, or does it only deliver grammatically correct but substance-poor texts? Especially for search engine optimization, not only word choice counts, but also trust, relevance, and linguistic depth.

Limited Personalization and Local Relevance

Search engines like Google use extensive user data to deliver search results locally and individually, for example through location, previous search history, or device information. ChatGPT, on the other hand, works (depending on the settings) largely without individual personalization, which is noticeable in the relevance of the results:

  • Local services are not always recognized
  • Regional providers are missing from recommendations
  • Current developments (e.g., events, news) are often not included without web access

In a country with a strong federal structure and regional differences like Germany, this can limit user acceptance.

Outlook: Will AI Replace Classic Search Engines?

Even though AI-supported systems like ChatGPT or Gemini can already answer many information requests directly today, it is unlikely that classic search engines will be completely replaced in the short term. Rather, a hybrid model is emerging: Users combine classic search with AI-supported tools – depending on context, goal, and information need.

Search engines remain relevant above all when it comes to verifying sources, complex research with multiple perspectives, or the targeted finding of current offers, products, or local results.

Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, scores points with quick summaries, explanations of complex matters, and dialogue-based access to knowledge.

In the long term, however, user behavior could change lastingly. Anyone who increasingly talks to AI in everyday life, whether through voice assistants, apps, or browser extensions, gets used to receiving answers instead of links.

Conclusion: How Companies in Germany Can Benefit from OpenAI

Even if ChatGPT will not immediately displace Google, it is clear: The search industry in Germany is at the beginning of a transformation. Companies that actively help shape this change, for example through an AI-supported content strategy, secure the attention of tomorrow today.
