Dead as a doornail in the promo-item shelf? Far from it! We tested 30 classic and creative promotional items – from ballpoint pens to cuddly blankets. Here you'll find out what really sticks (even in your mind) and which advertising classics are simply indestructible. Including an insider tip for everyone who still wants to make a real impression.
There are these moments: You go to a trade fair, the typical cloth bag is pressed into your hand at the entrance – and before you know it, you've landed in the Bermuda Triangle of giveaways. Ballpoint pens, gummy bears, key rings, mini notebooks. Everything's there. And you've seen it all a hundred times.
Promotional items have a reputation. A mixed one. For some they're charming brand ambassadors, for others pointless dust collectors. And that's exactly why we asked ourselves: Which promotional items still work today – and which are just a waste of space?
One thing is clear: Creativity alone isn't enough. If the giveaway looks fancy but falls apart the first time it's used, it does nobody any good – except maybe putting them in a bad mood. Conversely, a seemingly old-fashioned promotional item – say a classic mug or a simple ballpoint pen – can work wonders. Provided that design, quality and feel are right.
Because they are often underestimated: the printed advertising classics, which may not reinvent the wheel, but unfold their effect precisely because of that. They're there when you need them. They write when others scratch. They accompany you in everyday life – quite inconspicuously, but always with the brand logo in view.
And that's exactly the point: The best promotional items aren't loud. They're simply there. Quiet. Reliable. Useful. And they make your name unforgettable without stapling it to the recipient's forehead.
So what will it be? A gimmick that raises a quick laugh and then disappears? Or a companion that quietly makes an impact, day after day?
We took a close look at 30 of these little brand ambassadors. The results range from over the moon to deeply disappointing. But before we unpack the details, one thing up front: The era of run-of-the-mill promotional items is over. Today, whoever shows personality wins. And a little courage for the good old mug wouldn't hurt either.
The 30 Test Candidates – From Desk Star to Total Flop
We didn't hold back, we went all out: 30 promotional items, a colorful mix, tested without mercy – for usefulness, look, long-term effect and, quite honestly, also for the "Oh no, not again" factor.
Our Test Categories:
⚙️ Workmanship
Sounds dry, but is crucial. If the ballpoint pen gives up at the third word, that's the end of brand loyalty. We naturally also have cool mockups for ballpoint pens.
🎯 Usefulness
What does this thing do for me in everyday life? Or does it end up straight in the car footwell between old parking tickets and receipts?
💡 Creativity
Be honest: How many promotional items have you ever truly admired? Exactly. Us neither, only a few. But they exist – the little geniuses.
❤️ Memorability
Does your brand name stick – or does it blow away with the folding card at the next gust of wind?
The Big Promotional Item Stage
Here's a little foretaste of our candidates before we send them individually through the test course:
- The engraved ballpoint pen: Elegant. But does it write?
- The apple leather notebook: Sustainable and fancy – or overpriced eco-kitsch?
- The enamel mug with company logo: Nostalgia or dust collector?
- The fruit gummies with custom branding: Sweet enough for sympathy points?
- The wooden USB stick: Stylish, but what fits on it?
- The cotton bag with a slogan: Seen, laughed at, carried – or rather recycled?
Spoiler: Not everything shines. And some things stick. Literally.
The Biggest Disappointments – or: What You Can Save Yourself
Not everything that rustles, glitters or flashes works as a promotional item. Some items look smart in the catalog but are simply superfluous in everyday life – or worse: embarrassing. Here are three total failures from our test. With aftereffects.
❌ The Mass-Produced Plastic Ballpoint Pen
Promised: Writing comfort, long-lasting, affordable classic
Delivered: Scratchy, brittle and already out of steam by the third stroke.
The ballpoint pen is the dinosaur among promotional items – and when well made, a real hero in everyday life. But what we held in our hands here was the sad opposite. Thin plastic, floppy clip and an ink that refuses rather than flows.
Why disappointing?
Because it completely breaks the promise of reliability – which defines its image as an advertising medium. A promotional item that fails on first use unfortunately also sends exactly that message about your brand. And you certainly don't want that.
Grade: 4–
❌ The Mini Power Bank with Logo
Promised: Energy on the go, smart companion, tech-savvy
Delivered: Charging power like a whoopee cushion – sounds funny, but achieves nothing.
The idea is good: giving away practical power to take along. Unfortunately, our test unit was so weak that it didn't even manage half a smartphone life. On top of that came a cheap Micro-USB connector that was flaky from the very first plug-in.
Why disappointing?
Because tech works as a promotional item – when it works. And because a power bank that ends up urgently needing a charge itself simply causes frustration. Bad tech = bad impression.
Grade: 5+
❌ The Touch Pen for Smartphones
Promised: Stylus meets promotional gift – practical for everyone who types, swipes, scrolls
Delivered: A floppy rubber thing with the accuracy of a piece of chewing gum on a broomstick
What was once innovative is unfortunately just superfluous today. Most displays have long responded to any finger – so there's no need for a stylus that ends up smearing more than hitting. On top of that: The cheap variants of these pens often feel like a promotional gift from 2010. And look like it too.
Why disappointing?
Because the promotional item is not only impractical, but actively annoying. You won't catapult your brand forward with it – at most back into the gadget Middle Ages.
Grade: 4–
Not many made it. But three promotional items truly convinced us – through quality, everyday usefulness and that certain something. Here are the champions of the heart (and of reach):
🥇 1st Place: The Enamel Mug with Retro Print
Short verdict: Robust. Charming. Indestructible.
Whether in the office or camping – this mug is a statement. And not just visually: It keeps things warm, looks good and, thanks to the retro design, evokes so much nostalgia that even the marketing chief of 1992 would cry.
What sets it apart:
– Extremely durable
– High-quality print (yes, still legible even after 30 wash cycles)
– Used often and gladly – and stays visible
Score:
Workmanship: 10/10
Usefulness: 9/10
Creativity: 8/10
Memorability: 10/10
🥈 2nd Place: The Cotton Bag with a Cheeky Slogan
Short verdict: A real crowd-pleaser – for the market, for the office, for the Insta story.
This bag doesn't end up in the closet, but on the street. Whether with a cheeky claim or loving typography – here your brand gets out among people quite organically. And into conversation.
What sets it apart:
– Large advertising space with style
– More sustainable than any plastic bag
– Personal and practical
Score:
Workmanship: 9/10
Usefulness: 10/10
Creativity: 8/10
Memorability: 9/10
🥉 3rd Place: The Personalized Sweet Treat
Short verdict: Short-lived, but effective – especially at events.
Whether candy, chocolate or fruit gummies: The sweet snack with your logo creates good mood and literally puts your brand in people's mouths. Combines superbly with a flyer or a business card – then something even remains.
What sets it apart:
– Quick emotional effect
– Ideal for promotions, events, trade fairs
– Turns a giveaway into a conversation opener
Score:
Workmanship: 8/10
Usefulness: 7/10
Creativity: 9/10
Memorability: 8/10

Grade: 2–
🧲 Fridge Magnet with Slogan
✔️ Underrated. If it's funny, it stays – and is even given away.
Grade: 2
💨 Mini Handheld Fan (USB)
✖️ Sounds cool, but annoying – loud, weak, and completely useless by October at the latest.
Grade: 5
Those declared dead live longer – and promotional items are the best proof. Between cheap plastic junk and clever brand ambassadors lies a whole world of possibilities. Whoever chooses smartly today can achieve a big impact with a small gift. Whether practical helpers, charming eye-catchers or creative conversation openers – promotional items work if you take them seriously.
Our tip:
👉 Quality beats quantity.
👉 Everyday usefulness beats gimmick.
👉 Personality beats standard catalog.
The three best items in our test are real long-term favorites. The three worst? Lessons in "how not to do it". And all the rest? Offer potential – if you cleverly combine target group, material and message.
