Luminar now takes a look at your photo before changing anything. That’s what Skylum’s photo editor Fall Update 2026 is all about: Enhance, Atmosphere, Smart Composition, and the AI Assistant first adapt to the image in question. The edits are designed to stay true to what you photographed—and result in a photo you’d want to print and hang on your wall.
The update has been available to all eligible users since October 28, 2026. Here’s what’s new, who gets it, and how much Luminar currently costs for Black Friday.

The Enhance slider looks just as it always has. What’s changed is what happens behind the scenes: instead of brightening and saturating every photo in the same way, the new Enhance AI analyzes the image first. It identifies eight image scenarios and tailors the correction based on factors including exposure, color cast, sky, white balance, and the risk of blown highlights or halos.
Additional safeguards then kick in: bright areas are protected instead of simply being made brighter. The brightest tones fade smoothly instead of being clipped abruptly. And the color balance is preserved when boosting the image would otherwise accentuate a color cast. Enhance now treats skin and sky the same way. The goal: your photo should look natural even at 100 %.
The same portrait edited with the old Enhance (left) and the new version (right): skin and light-colored fabrics look more natural, and the sky doesn’t become oversaturated.
Tip: Enhance is best tested on a challenging photo—a sunset, a deep blue sky, a hazy landscape, or a portrait.
Atmosphere: fog that really belongs in the image
The previous Atmosphere tool layered prepared textures over the photo. The new version instead creates volumetric 3D fog. This means it has a position and shape within the scene, its clouds form in three dimensions, and it responds to light and shadow.
The fog takes its color from your photo instead of always being white—from cool morning haze to streetlights glowing through the mist. It behaves differently in ground-level shots than in drone photos, and you can move the clouds around in the image in real time. The four previous fog modes have become clearly distinct presets.
Before and after: The 3D fog settles into the terrain around the church instead of lying over the whole image like a sheet.
Smart Composition: a better crop
Sometimes the better photo is already in the image; it just needs the right crop. Smart Composition first analyzes the entire scene: the main subject, where people are looking, and what matters most in the image. Then several AI models generate numerous possible crops, evaluate them, and show you several different options based on classic composition rules.
Until now, Luminar provided exactly one suggestion. Now you can browse options such as the rule of thirds, the Golden Spiral, or a centered composition, each with guide lines overlaid. Luminar leaves space in the direction a person is looking, and automatically straightens the horizon. You decide which crop to use.
Smart Composition suggests several crops in the Crop tool, here using the Golden Spiral.
AI Assistant: just say what you want
You don’t need to know the name of a tool to use it. Describe what you want to the AI Assistant in your own words, for example: “Make it warmer and remove the cables.” It recognizes whether you want an edit, advice on a tool, instructions, or an assessment of your photo.
Specific requests are applied as a preset with exactly the change you asked for—on top of your existing edits. To do this, it draws on 22 Luminar tools, covering everything from light, color, and tonal values to Sky AI, Face AI, and Skin AI, as well as Erase and effects.
Creative requests like “cinematic” or “show me three options” get three suitable presets from the Marketplace, tailored to the subject and lighting.
Photo feedback: If you like, it will tell you what works well, point out up to three weaknesses, and suggest a first step to improve your photo.
Software questions are answered in the desktop version based on Luminar documentation.
Transparency: It tells you what it changed—and also what it couldn’t do and which tool you can use to proceed.
Print and export directly from Luminar
You can now print a finished photo directly from Luminar on your own printer, or order a professional lab print delivered to your home. The export process has also been revamped: you can preview your image full screen before saving, add text or image watermarks, set the exact dimensions, and manage an export queue. Luminar remembers your settings.
Also new: Luminar in your browser
Luminar on Web launched on October 15, letting you edit directly in your browser. Skylum has also announced a completely new masking feature for the end of November, which is set to significantly expand the editing options.
