A personal AI agent such as Claude or ChatGPT is supposed to be connectable to your WordPress site in the future without any technical knowledge. You enter the address of your site in the agent, the agent recognizes WordPress and shows you a link for authorization, and then you log in. Jason Adams from the WordPress AI team describes this process in a proposal from October 28. The target version is WordPress 7.3; the project has not yet published a date for it.

The foundation is called Model Context Protocol (MCP). Through this open standard, AI agents access third-party programs.

How do you connect an AI agent to WordPress today?

Today you need the plugin MCP Adapter for this, which WordPress.org has offered in the plugin directory since the beginning of October. Version 0.7.1 requires WordPress 6.9 and runs on more than 50,000 sites. The adapter only passes on what is registered as Abilities: individual capabilities such as "read posts" or "change setting" that WordPress or another plugin provides. Additional Abilities are supplied, for example, by the experimental plugin AI.

The agent is logged in with an application password, which you generate in your user profile (available since WordPress 5.6) and store in the agent. Adams calls this route too cumbersome for the broad mass of WordPress users and explicitly hopes in the proposal that nobody copies the password into the chat as plain text.

What is coming with WordPress 7.2 and 7.3?

The AI team divides the work into four areas. The team wants to use the development cycle of version 7.2 for foundations and prototypes:

  • MCP: The MCP Adapter is supposed to become more stable and secure by version 7.2. With 7.3, the plugin is supposed to be merged into WordPress itself, either directly or as a bundled package.
  • Abilities: A basic set for typical administration tasks is planned for 7.3, with some Abilities possibly already in the beta of 7.2.
  • Login: Instead of the application password, authorization via OAuth is supposed to arrive with 7.3. For the secure handling of the access credentials, the new Secrets API interface is under consideration, which is supposed to be released with version 7.2.
  • Usability: The team wants to test the path from the first connection to the revocation of permissions with prototypes in 7.2.

The plan is not yet binding. According to Adams, whether the features land in 7.3 depends on technical maturity, security reviews, and the usual code review; for all four areas the team is still looking for people to take responsibility. The project explicitly does not plan its own AI agent in WordPress.

The site builder Webflow is already further along here: through the Webflow MCP Server, Claude, ChatGPT, and Codex, among others, access Webflow projects. With WordPress, individual providers have so far built such connections; Adams names Jetpack, Elementor, and WPVibe. With the proposal, every WordPress site would get the same access, regardless of hosting or page builder.

What this means for you

If you want to see right now what an agent does on your site, it is best to use a test copy instead of the live site. Create a separate user account for the agent with as few permissions as possible, because the MCP Adapter checks with every action whether the logged-in account is allowed to carry it out. Which role may do what is shown in the lesson on user roles and permissions in the WordPress course for beginners. After the test, you revoke the application password in your profile.

If you manage sites for clients, it is best not to build your workflows firmly on the plugin yet. Version 0.7.0 from October 2 brought several breaking changes, and a new login method is supposed to arrive with 7.3. Whether the first Abilities are already in WordPress 7.2 you will see at the launch of version 7.2 on December 8.

Jason Adams published the proposal on October 28, 2026, on the blog of the WordPress AI team.
