Instagram has released its video editor Edits as a Mac app. The download is free, and 4K export remains free of watermarks, according to Digital Trends. Requirements are a Mac with an Apple chip from M1 onward and an Instagram account.
What can Edits do on the Mac?
The timeline works with multiple tracks, keyframes, and audio waveforms, which let you align cuts to the beat of the music. Color correction includes color wheels, curves, and a log conversion. You can import your own LUTs and font files, and you can customize the keyboard shortcuts. The app generates automatic subtitles without limits, and a library of licensed and royalty-free music is available as well.
A project can cover multiple aspect ratios, such as portrait and landscape. You publish finished videos directly to Instagram, including tags, location, and Trial Reels, Instagram's feature for testing Reels. Alternatively, you export in 4K and upload the video to other platforms.
What are the limits of the Mac app?
A version for Windows or Linux does not exist, and Intel Macs remain excluded. Which macOS version Edits requires is unclear. According to iGeeksBlog, projects from the smartphone cannot yet be edited further on the Mac; only saved audio and text styles are carried over. According to onlinemarketing.de, Instagram is working on cross-device editing.
Edits for Mac: Requirements
What the new Mac app needs and what it still lacks
- Free download, 4K export without watermark
- Mac with Apple chip from M1 onward
- Instagram account for sign-in
- No Windows or Linux version
- No Intel Macs
- Phone projects cannot yet be edited further on the Mac
Unclear: macOS version, country, German interface, subtitle languages

Whether the interface will be available in German, which languages the subtitles will work in on the desktop version, and whether the download is enabled in every country has not yet been determined. iClarified and Fone Arena also report an MCP interface (Model Context Protocol) through which AI agents such as Meta's Muse can create a rough cut. According to iGeeksBlog, Instagram has not confirmed the interface so far. The feature is therefore considered uncertain.
How does Edits rank among the free editors?
Two free editing programs are already available on the Mac: Apple's iMovie, which comes with every Mac, and the free version of DaVinci Resolve. Edits focuses on the direct route to Instagram including Trial Reels. Instagram puts the number of Edits users at 50 million, but so far on the smartphone.
Weekly updates have been announced. The feature set will therefore change quickly.
What this means for you
First check in the Apple menu under "About This Mac" which chip your Mac has, because the app only runs from M1 onward. If you have been editing Reels on your phone so far, it's best to try Edits on a single project and stick to one device per project. Switching between smartphone and Mac doesn't work yet.
Test German subtitles beforehand on a short video, because the languages of the desktop version are unclear. For a comparison with iMovie or DaVinci Resolve, the same scene in all programs works well: color correction, export time, and image quality quickly show whether switching is worthwhile. Given the weekly updates, a second look at the feature list in a few weeks won't hurt.
Digital Trends reported the launch on November 5, 2026, onlinemarketing.de on November 6, 2026.
