PR Print & prepress PUB Books & magazines

Use cases

Typeset print products, brochures, magazines, catalogues and books with master pages, style sheets and text flow. Output print files with CMYK, spot colours, ICC colour management, bleed and PDF/X and check them beforehand with a layout check. Maintain long documents with the book function, table of contents, index, footnotes and cross-references. Exchange layouts with InDesign users via IDML and take over PDFs as editable projects. Create ePubs and HTML5 publications from the same project.

Our assessment

QuarkXPress is a full-featured DTP program with prepress, a book function, IDML import and export and digital output as ePub and HTML5. Besides the subscription there is a perpetual licence; new versions, support and the cloud AI Quarky then depend on a maintenance plan that renews automatically every year. In our view it suits graphic design studios, publishers and prepress; it is less intended for quick template designs, real-time teamwork and structured technical documentation.

  • Operating systems: Windows, macOS

Strengths

  • Besides the subscription there is a perpetual licence: you may use the purchased version indefinitely, and one year of maintenance and support is included.[2][18]
  • Opens InDesign files in the IDML exchange format as a project and exports print layouts as an IDML file or IDML package for InDesign.[19]
  • Opens PDF and AI files directly as a project and converts vector graphics and text from PDF, AI, EPS and WMF into editable objects.[16][20]
  • Prepress with PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3 and PDF/X-4, spot colours, bleed, ICC colour management with soft proofing and layout checks via Job Jackets.[16][15][17]
  • Books made of several layouts with a table of contents and index across the whole book, plus footnotes, endnotes and cross-references; a book can be exported as a reflow ePub.[12][9]
  • You export digital layouts as fixed-layout or reflow ePub or as an HTML5 publication with buttons, slideshows and audio.[22]
  • According to the licence agreement, Quark does not train AI models on content from your AI requests; the AI features can be switched off in the preferences.[10][4]
  • According to the system requirements, it runs natively on Macs with Apple Silicon.[6]

Weaknesses

  • With the perpetual licence you only get new versions, support and the AI features with an active maintenance plan, which renews automatically at list price.[2][4][3]
  • According to the system requirements an internet connection is required; according to the licence agreement, the licensing technology authenticates use via a constant internet connection.[5][10]
  • The trial runs for seven days; according to the manual, saving and output as PDF, EPS and print are blocked during the trial.[25][11]
  • QuarkXPress only converts INDD files if InDesign is installed on the computer; according to the manual, conversions are never fully identical.[19]
  • Cross-references only point to footnotes, endnotes, text anchors and numbered items and only update when you synchronise them.[14]
  • The AI features need an internet connection and have an annual allowance; the content of your AI requests goes to third-party providers such as Microsoft.[4][10]
  • According to its support policy, Quark usually supports a version for 24 to 30 months; without a maintenance plan the perpetual licence gets no upgrades and no technical support.[26][3]
  • In our view, features such as Job Jackets, Composition Zones and the many palettes require a longer learning period than simple template-based tools. Editorial assessment

Edition, version and price

Quark sells QuarkXPress in Germany in two ways: as a prepaid annual subscription and as a perpetual licence that includes one year of maintenance and support. Both unlock the same complete program for Windows and macOS. This comparison uses the perpetual licence as the reference edition because, over three years, it costs less than the annual subscription, provided you cancel the maintenance renewal after the first year. If you let maintenance continue, the perpetual licence costs more than the annual subscription over three years; both calculations are shown with the plan. According to Quark, you may use the purchased version indefinitely.

The maintenance plan is what matters. It provides upgrades, updates, technical support and the AI features. After the first year it renews automatically at list price, but you can cancel the renewal at any time. Without an active plan you no longer get new versions or support, and the AI features are blocked. You keep the licence for the last version you downloaded while maintenance was active. According to Quark, two feature releases appear each year, in autumn and in spring. According to its support policy, Quark usually supports a version for 24 to 30 months, after which support for it ends.

With the subscription, according to Quark, you pay a usage fee in advance and use the software with upgrades, updates and support as long as the subscription is active. In the first year the subscription costs more than on the following renewals. In addition, QuarkXPress is available in the Mac App Store as a monthly or annual subscription. This variant runs on the Mac only and, according to the manual, is a subscription-only version. Over three years, the annual App Store subscription costs slightly less than the perpetual licence, but it does not cover Windows. The comparison does not consider prices for education, government and non-profit organisations or renewals for existing customers.

The current version is QuarkXPress 2026, version 22.0.1; the release notes are dated December 2025. According to the download page, version 22.0 appeared in October 2025. Supported systems are macOS 26 (Tahoe), 15 (Sequoia) and 14 (Sonoma) as well as Windows 11 from version 24H2 and Windows 10 version 22H2, each 64-bit. According to the system requirements, QuarkXPress runs natively on Macs with Apple Silicon. Quark does not mention a Windows version for ARM processors. The product page still lists Windows 11, 10 and 8.1; the system requirements for version 2026 are narrower.

The interface is available in German. According to the manual, the program language follows the operating system language at installation. A licence includes one activation: QuarkXPress may run on several computers, but on one at a time. You choose which computer in the licence management console. According to the system requirements you need an internet connection, and the licence agreement describes licensing technology that authenticates use via a constant internet connection. For organisations without internet access there is offline activation via support. Quark does not document how long QuarkXPress starts without internet.

The free trial runs for seven days. According to the manual, during the trial you can neither save nor output as PDF, EPS or print.

Layout and typography

QuarkXPress works with projects that can contain several layouts for print or digital output. According to the manual, a project may have up to 10,000 pages, also with different page sizes in the same layout. Master pages act as templates for recurring elements such as page numbers, headers and column grids; layers separate content across all pages.

For text there are paragraph and character style sheets, style groups and conditional styles. Conditional styles apply style sheets automatically according to defined rules. They should not be confused with conditional text, which shows or hides text variants; the manual does not describe conditional text. Text flows through linked text boxes, also across many pages, and all linked boxes form a single story. For a calm typesetting result there are design grids: page grids on master pages, grids in text boxes and a baseline grid to which you align paragraphs.

Typographically, QuarkXPress offers OpenType features such as ligatures and stylistic sets, colour fonts and, since version 2026, variable fonts, where you adjust weight or width continuously, for example. According to the release notes, support for variable fonts in HTML and ePub export and in IDML exchange is still in development. Hyphenation and spell checking depend on the language you assign to the text; a Hunspell spell checker is also available. New in version 2026 are mathematical equations from LaTeX or MathML.

Tables can contain text and pictures, use table styles and repeat header and footer rows across several pages. You can also bring in tables and charts from Excel. Item styles store settings for boxes, such as their colour. You place pictures as PSD with layers and channels, as PDF, AI, EPS, SVG, WebP or HEIC, among others. QuarkXPress applies filters and adjustments to pictures non-destructively. A stock images palette searches royalty-free images from online services such as Unsplash and Pexels. According to Quark, the Pantone colour libraries are included at no extra charge.

You bring in text from Word with its style sheets and footnotes. There is a dedicated import function for content in Markdown format. Ready-made template packs for flyers or social media, as design platforms offer them, are not described in the manual; QuarkXPress relies on your own layouts with master pages and style sheets.

Print and digital output

For print, you create colours in the CMYK model, use spot colours from colour systems such as Pantone and check the result with soft proofing. Colour management works with ICC profiles: source and output setups define where colours come from and where they are going, and you assign a profile and rendering intent to pictures when importing them. New in version 2026 is paper colour, which shows how your layout looks on coloured paper.

When exporting PDFs, QuarkXPress can verify against PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3 or PDF/X-4. You set the bleed in the layout and on export. In the print dialog, QuarkXPress lists spot colours and process inks as separate plates. You output colour separations as in-RIP separations; according to the manual, QuarkXPress no longer supports host-based separations. The manual does not describe a dedicated separations or overprint view; you control overprinting and knockout in the Colors palette. Accessible PDFs according to the PDF/UA standard are also possible.

The Job Jackets layout check (Evaluate Layout) serves as preflight. It checks a layout against rules, for example on boxes, pictures, fonts or overprinting, and shows where you need to make corrections. If you want, the check runs automatically when saving, when closing and before output. To hand off to the print shop, the Collect for Output function gathers the project with linked pictures, fonts and ICC profiles.

For digital output you create dedicated digital layouts. You export them as ePub, either with a fixed layout or as reflow, where the text adapts to the reading device. You export whole books as reflow ePub. In addition, QuarkXPress creates HTML5 publications for the browser, which you host on your own server. These HTML5 publications support interactive elements such as buttons, slideshows, video and audio, and Flex layouts adapt to different screen sizes. The manual does not describe interactive PDFs with form fields or buttons, but it does describe hyperlinks and bookmarks in PDFs.

Long documents and automation

For books and catalogues, the book function combines several layouts as chapters. You synchronise style sheets, colours and other settings between the chapters, page numbers run across the whole book, and you create a PDF directly from the book. A book can also be merged into a single project or exported as a reflow ePub.

Tables of contents are built with lists: QuarkXPress collects paragraphs with certain style sheets, such as headings, builds the table from them and updates it when things change. For the index, you mark terms on up to four levels, add cross-references and build the index from the Index palette. Table of contents and index also work across a whole book.

You design footnotes and endnotes with their own styles and separators, convert them into each other if needed and bring them in from Word files. Cross-references are possible but only point to footnotes, endnotes, text anchors and numbered items. If the target changes, you update the reference by synchronising it. Content variables insert changing information, such as running headers, page references or dates. For manuals with formulas, the new support for LaTeX and MathML helps.

The QuarkXPress 2026 manual does not describe conditional text, which lets you show and hide variants of a document. A structure based on XML or DITA for content is not documented there either; QuarkXPress uses XML for Job Jackets, that is, for specifications and rules. The manual also does not describe a data merge that creates data-driven layouts from a CSV or Excel table.

You can automate with scripts in JavaScript, which has its own palette and debugger, and with AppleScript. On macOS, QuarkXPress comes with a collection of AppleScript scripts, for example for boxes, pictures, tables and typography. Additional features are added via XTensions modules from Quark or third parties. For importing formatted text there is the XPress Tags tag format.

AI, online services and collaboration

The AI features are called Quarky and Font Pairing. Quarky generates text on a topic, suggests titles, summarises, paraphrases, corrects grammar, changes the tone and translates into a target language; with a prompt you give your own instructions. Font Pairing suggests matching font combinations from the Google Fonts library. The manual and the AI FAQ do not mention AI features for generating or editing images. In local image libraries you can also search by image content; according to the manual this search is AI-powered, but Quark does not say where it runs.

Quarky and Font Pairing need an active internet connection. According to the licence agreement, the content of your AI requests goes to third-party AI service providers, including Microsoft, and Quark processes and stores data in the USA. According to the licence agreement, Quark does not train AI models on this content, and the AI only processes the text you explicitly submit. Use is limited: each licence gets an annual allowance of 7,200 AI pages for Quarky, with one page corresponding to about 350 words of input and output, plus 5,000 font pairing suggestions. Unused pages expire at the end of the year. In the preferences you see your usage and switch the features off; according to the licence agreement they are switched on by default.

For the reference edition this means: in the first year, the AI can be used through the included maintenance. When the maintenance plan expires, you lose access. With the subscription it remains available as long as the subscription runs. Other online services are the stock image search and the Google Fonts library; the licensing technology also uses the internet.

The manual does not describe real-time co-editing as offered by cloud platforms. With Composition Zones you split a layout into areas that team members work on at the same time, for example via a shared network folder; however, a composition zone can be edited by one person at a time. Shared content links items that appear in several places in a project. Via a shared Job Jackets file, several designers share specifications such as style sheets, colours and output styles, and changes are passed on to the linked projects. Notes and the Redline change tracking help with approvals. For editors who work on text without touching the layout, Quark sells the add-on QuarkXPress CopyDesk. The manual does not describe a brand kit with logos and locked template areas as on design platforms; you can lock individual items against accidental changes.

Files, exchange and switching

QuarkXPress saves projects in its own format. For older versions of QuarkXPress, you save layouts in an earlier version format. There are also converters for older documents: the Legacy Document Converter on macOS and the QuarkXPress Document Converter on Windows.

Exchange with InDesign works via IDML. QuarkXPress opens IDML files as a project and, according to the manual, takes over text, pictures, style sheets, colours, gradients, anchored items and more; IDML files from InDesign CS4 cannot be converted. Features that InDesign has and QuarkXPress lacks are lost, and according to the manual a conversion is never fully identical. QuarkXPress only converts INDD files if InDesign is installed on the same computer. In the other direction, you export print layouts as IDML or as an IDML package for InDesign; this requires Java to be installed. Digital layouts cannot be exported as IDML.

You open PDF and AI files directly as a project or insert their pages into an existing project. You convert vector graphics and text from PDF, AI, EPS and WMF into editable QuarkXPress objects; this does not work for pure raster images. You bring in Word files with style sheets and footnotes, and tables and charts from Excel as well.

You hand the print shop a PDF/X or the collected project with pictures, fonts and colour profiles. If you later switch to another program, IDML is the obvious route for print layouts. In our view, you should expect that features specific to QuarkXPress, such as Composition Zones, Job Jackets or HTML5 interactions, do not carry over when switching and that layouts need rework in the target program.

Who QuarkXPress suits

In our view, QuarkXPress suits you if:

  • you design print products, magazines, catalogues or books with prepress, PDF/X and spot colours,
  • you prefer a perpetual licence to an ongoing subscription and want to manage maintenance deliberately,
  • you exchange files with InDesign users via IDML or take over PDFs as editable layouts,
  • you typeset long documents with a table of contents, index, footnotes and the book function,
  • you want to create ePub or HTML5 publications from the same program alongside print.

In our view, QuarkXPress is less suitable if:

  • you want to create flyers or social media graphics quickly from ready-made templates without a learning curve,
  • you want to co-edit in real time in the browser or distribute brand templates with locked areas,
  • you maintain technical documentation with conditional text, XML or DITA,
  • you want to create data-driven layouts directly from table data,
  • you have to work permanently without an internet connection or are looking for AI features without the cloud,
  • you need a free program or a longer trial that lets you save.

Who is QuarkXPress suitable for?

Editorial assessment

  • For beginners and clubs partly suited

Design flyers, invitations and club magazines with a German interface

German interface, master pages and print PDFs with bleed are available. In our view, however, QuarkXPress is designed for professional prepress and requires a learning period. The manual does not describe ready-made template packs, the trial runs for seven days without saving or PDF output, and in our view the licence hardly pays off for occasional print products.

  • For graphic design and agencies well suited

Produce print files and client projects and exchange them with InDesign users

CMYK, spot colours with Pantone libraries, ICC colour management with soft proofing, PDF/X-1a to PDF/X-4, bleed and layout checks via Job Jackets. You open IDML files as a project and return print layouts as an IDML package; you take over PDFs as editable layouts. The manual does not describe a separations view, and INDD files require an installed InDesign.

  • For books, magazines and catalogues well suited

Typeset books, magazines and catalogues with many pages and publish them digitally

Master pages, paragraph and character style sheets, linked text boxes, baseline grid, books with a table of contents and index across all chapters, footnotes and endnotes, and projects with up to 10,000 pages. Digitally, you export fixed-layout or reflow ePubs and HTML5 publications. Cross-references are limited to footnotes, anchors and numbered items.

  • For technical writing partly suited

Typeset manuals with the book function, cross-references and formulas

Book function, cross-references, content variables, formulas from LaTeX or MathML and output as PDF, ePub and HTML5 are available. The manual does not describe conditional text or a structure based on XML or DITA, and you have to synchronise cross-references after changes. In our view, programs specialised in structured documentation are a better fit for it.

  • For marketing and social media partly suited

Create marketing material in many formats as a team

Job Jackets share style sheets and colours within the team, Composition Zones allow parallel work on parts of a layout, and Quarky writes and translates text via the cloud. The manual does not describe a brand kit with logos, locked template areas, automatic resizing, data-driven layouts or real-time co-editing.

  • Without subscription partly suited

Buy once and keep working without ongoing costs

You may use the perpetual licence indefinitely, and one year of maintenance is included. After that, maintenance renews automatically until you cancel, and without it there are no new versions, no support and no AI. According to the system requirements and the licence agreement, the licensing technology needs an internet connection; Quark does not document how long QuarkXPress starts without internet.

Conclusion

QuarkXPress is an extensive layout program for Windows and macOS that covers the classic tasks of typesetting and prepress: master pages, style sheets, linked text boxes, baseline grid, CMYK with spot colours and ICC colour management, PDF/X and a layout check via Job Jackets. For publishers it offers books with a table of contents and index, footnotes and endnotes, and output as ePub and HTML5. IDML import and export help with exchanging files with InDesign, and you open PDFs as editable projects. Besides the subscription there is a perpetual licence, which the comparison uses as the reference edition; new versions, support and the AI features then depend on a maintenance plan that renews automatically every year at list price until you cancel. The AI Quarky writes, summarises and translates text via the cloud with an annual allowance; according to the licence agreement, Quark does not train models on your requests. Limits show in technical documentation without conditional text and XML structure, in teamwork without real-time co-editing and in data-driven layouts, which the manual does not describe. According to the system requirements and the licence agreement, QuarkXPress also needs an internet connection for the licence. In our view, QuarkXPress suits graphic design studios, publishers and prepress teams looking for a full-featured DTP program with a perpetual licence who want to manage maintenance deliberately.
