Facts about Saint Nicholas
Saint Nicholas, celebrated on December 6th, is an important figure in both Western and Eastern Christian traditions. He is often seen as a benefactor and protector of children and is known for his generous deeds, which earned him the reputation of a true saint. His presumed life took place in the 4th century in Myra, in present-day Turkey. The legends surrounding Saint Nicholas are multifaceted: one of the most well-known stories tells of his secret donation of gold for a poor family, who would otherwise have had to save themselves by selling their daughters. These deeds contributed to Nicholas being revered as the patron saint of children and sailors.
Saint Nicholas is often portrayed with traditional attributes such as a red bishop's robe, a bishop's staff, and a sack of gifts. These symbols embody both his role as a clergyman and his generosity. In many countries, the custom of giving gifts on the night of December 5th to 6th is widespread, so children place their shoes or boots outside the door, hoping that Saint Nicholas will fill them with gifts.
