Exciting Facts About the Discovery of America

Christopher Columbus set sail from Spain in 1492 to find a new route to India, but instead, he encountered the coasts of present-day America. His sea map was a valuable instrument: At that time, maps were mostly drawn by hand, featuring sailing routes, wind directions, and drawings of sea monsters. Children learned geography and history early on with such representations. The map shows simple lines that you can color with vibrant blue for the sea and gold or brown for the coasts. In the 15th century, printing maps was expensive; only wealthy merchants and monarchs owned real copies. Columbus’ fleet consisted of three ships – the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Niña. The crossing took about ten weeks. This coloring page captures the excitement and curiosity of the children standing by the map. Therefore, it is also well-suited as an introduction to lesson units on the discovery of America or as a project with friends and family.
