ShareX, the free open-source program for screenshots and screen recordings on Windows, was released in version 22.4.0 on November 8, 2026. The project's changelog lists two new features for anyone who records tutorials and guides. The image editor now includes a tool that enlarges or crops the canvas. For recordings on HDR screens, tone mapping is added, the conversion of the wide HDR brightness range to the normal image range.

The version is part of a rapid series of updates. Since November 2, the project has released four versions, 22.1.0 to 22.4.0, at intervals of one to four days.

What does ShareX 22.4.0 bring?

In the image editor, the new "Canvas size" tool creates space around an image: if you drag the frame outward, area is added in a selectable fill color; if you drag it inward, the editor crops the image. The "Auto-expand canvas" option enlarges the canvas automatically as soon as text or shapes extend beyond the edge (Task settings, Tools, Image editor). Arrows gain rounded corners.

Three things change when recording. The "HDR tone mapping" option (Task settings, Screen recorder) is meant to prevent recordings from HDR screens from looking washed out, the project writes. The recording bar now also appears before recordings via FFmpeg. And areas that are too large for H.264 are recorded by ShareX as HEVC instead of aborting with an error message.

The interface can be customized more extensively. The main window shows the task list either as a list or as thumbnails. New settings for the spacing between controls show a live preview, and a compact mode restores the spacing of ShareX 21 (Application settings, Theme). The window that appears after capture now works in a goal-oriented way. If you specify what should end up in the clipboard, ShareX selects the necessary tasks itself.

How quickly do the updates follow one another?

The major version 22.0.0 was released on October 20, 2026 with its own screen recording without FFmpeg. The project announced in the changelog that this version was significantly less stable than earlier versions. After that, 22.1.0 brought the photo editor and a GIF recording without FFmpeg on November 2, 22.2.0 brought WebP screenshots on November 6, and 22.3.0 brought the recording of multiple regions (Multi region mode) on November 7.

New in 22.4.0 is also a selection dialog after the update: ShareX lets you choose the icon set. The "Legacy" set, which 22.3.0 introduced, now also applies to the recording bar, the tool windows, and the image effects.

ShareX runs only on Windows, costs nothing, and according to the project page shows no ads. German is among the 29 languages. The downloads of this version are 64-bit versions and are available as an installer and as a portable version on GitHub. The project page also lists Microsoft Store and Steam; whether 22.4.0 is already available there, TutKit has not checked.

What this means for you

If you record tutorials on an HDR screen, make one test recording with the "HDR tone mapping" option switched on and one without. Whether the colors in the video match your screen, you only see by comparison.

If H.264 is no longer sufficient for a very large recording area, ShareX now saves the recording as HEVC. Open a test file in your editing software before a job depends on it.

If the spacing in the new interface is too large for you, set compact mode under Application settings, Theme, or choose the Legacy icon set after the update. As in the changelog, the menu names are in English and may differ in the German interface.

If a deadline depends on ShareX, don't install an update the evening before. With four versions in seven days and a major version that the project itself announced as less stable, you are better off trying the new version first as a portable version.

The ShareX project released version 22.4.0 on November 8, 2026.
