Romain Huet, who is responsible for working with developers at OpenAI, named a timeframe for Dots in Europe at the DevDay Exchange in Berlin. After talks with regulators, the agent is supposed to be more widely available "in a few weeks," The Decoder reports from the event.

Dots have been in ChatGPT since September 29. At launch, OpenAI excluded personal Pro accounts in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, while certain business accounts there already get access. This restriction is still stated on the German help page. Germany and Austria are part of the Economic Area.

What does a Dot do?

A Dot pursues a goal across multiple conversations and keeps working in between on its own computer in the cloud, which you can view at any time via the Dot's profile and operate yourself if needed. The agent researches, creates content, and uses the apps you connect, such as Slack or your email account. As an example, OpenAI cites accompanying texts for a podcast episode and social media posts that the agent creates from the transcript of an interview.

You set rules for individual actions. Four levels are available: execute without asking, only on explicit instruction, ask beforehand, or leave the task to you. From connected apps, the agent also saves information on its own in its memory, which ChatGPT calls "Memories." If you disconnect an app, the information gained from it is retained. This data is only gone when you reset the entire Dot.

How can you get Dots today?

In Germany, the only route at present is via ChatGPT Business. There, the Premium user license unlocks the agent, while the Standard license does not. You book Business for two people or more, and because the two license types can be mixed, the whole team doesn't need the more expensive license.

A Premium license costs about five times as much as a Standard license and roughly as much as the smallest Pro subscription. The amounts for annual and monthly billing are listed on the German pricing page.

The same pricing page already lists the Dot among the features of the Pro subscription. For accounts from Germany, this does not yet apply. The new ability to write to the agent via iMessage or RCS, the SMS successor in Android messaging apps, is restricted by the release notes from October 28 to a beta for Pro customers in the US.

What this means for you

A Pro subscription solely for Dots is not yet worthwhile in Germany, because until OpenAI changes the help page, you won't get the agent with this subscription. "In a few weeks" describes an intention; a date is still pending.

If you work in a team with ChatGPT Business, a single Premium license is enough to test Dots on a real project. It's best to decide beforehand which apps the agent may see: whatever it has read once stays in its memory until it is reset. If customer emails are in the connected inbox, the "ask beforehand" level is the safe choice to start with.

You can practice how to set up agents with clear goals, fixed approvals, and verifiable intermediate steps in the OpenAI Agent Builder course on TutKit.
