Canva AI has been editing designs since Thursday with Brush, an in-house development from Canva Research. The model recognizes the structure, layers, and styling of an existing design and directly implements change requests from the chat, from a single line of text to all slides of a presentation. Brush is initially available for accounts with Canva Pro, as Canva writes in the announcement in its newsroom.

What does Brush change compared to the previous design agent?

Brush works in a loop: The model writes small programs that move, recolor, or swap design elements, runs them, and then checks on the page whether the change fits. The result remains an ordinary Canva design whose text, images, colors, and layout you can continue to adjust by hand in the editor.

Canva states that Brush handles ordinary edits up to 69 percent faster than the previous design agent and costs 46 percent less per task. In internal tests, the model performed at least as well as its predecessor on most tasks, most strongly in redesigning and in converting to other formats. Independent tests of the figures are still lacking.

A freely available model, whose name Canva does not reveal, served as the basis. Canva Research, the company's AI department with 160 people, retrained this model with real design and editing tasks, including anonymized data from people who have agreed to the training.

How do you use Brush?

Open an existing design in the editor or attach a design in Canva AI. In the selection menu of Canva AI, you then choose the entry "Brush" so that the model takes over the entire edit. After that, you give further instructions in the chat or continue working yourself.

Canva names three tasks as examples:

  • redesign a design, for example with a different color scheme, different weather in the image, or a different mood
  • a change across all pages of a multi-page design, for example new headings in one go
  • convert a design for a different channel, for example a presentation slide as an Instagram graphic

The connection to your brand kit is still missing. Canva is working on it, as well as on layouts with many images and on letting you refer to attached files in the chat.

Who gets Brush, and what does using it cost?

So far, Brush only runs in Canva Pro. Canva plans to enable Brush for the other plans later but gives no date. Canva does not mention any restriction by country. German is in the language list of Canva AI in the Help Center. Whether Brush implements German instructions as reliably as English ones, Canva leaves open.

Canva does not name a separate price for Brush. Every use of Canva AI is counted against your monthly AI allowance. Whether an edit with Brush consumes less of the allowance because it is cheaper for Canva, Canva does not say.

Brush comes one week after the image model Craft, which also comes from Canva Research. Figma published a report on the same day about its own retrained model for design changes, on which part of the Figma agent is based. Both providers rely on their own specialized models for edits and continue to leave other tasks to large models from their partners.

What this means for you

With a Pro account, it's worth testing on a copy of a longer presentation. Let Brush change all headings at once and compare the result with a run without Brush selected. Pay particular attention to spacing and font sizes on the later slides, because Canva itself calls Brush a first version.

For client projects with fixed brand colors and fonts, it's best to check each result by hand against the brand kit until Canva delivers the announced connection. If you work with Canva Teams or Canva Business, you wait for the rollout. How you refine text, images, and colors by hand in the editor is shown step by step in the Canva tutorial.

Canva introduced Brush on October 29, 2026.
