Excire has brought its image management software Excire Foto 2027 to version 5.1. For videos, the program now automatically selects key frames from different scenes, recognizes their content using AI, and assigns the keywords it finds to the entire clip. Until now, the content of longer videos could only be searched to a limited extent, reports DOCMA.
The second major innovation is place names for photos and videos with GPS data. For owners of Excire Foto 2027, the autumn update is free; the program runs on Windows 11 and macOS 12 and later.
How does the new video search work?
Using the key frames, Excire Foto also recognizes subjects that only appear late in the video. As an example, DOCMA cites a long wedding video in which the bridal couple's dance lasts only a few seconds: a search for a dancing bridal couple should still find the clip.
You can see which key frames the program has selected in the advanced video player. There you mark additional individual frames for analysis or remove ones that have already been selected, and if you wish, you can also export the key frames as separate image files. The AI analysis runs entirely on your computer. Excire uploads neither photos nor videos to a cloud and also does not use the recordings to train AI models.
What do the place names and the other new features offer?
From GPS coordinates, Excire Foto determines cities or regions and additionally saves this location information in the IPTC metadata of the recordings. Instead of searching for photos on the world map, you filter directly by place name. During import, the assignment runs automatically; for photos and videos that have already been imported, you add location information individually, as a selection, or all at once. Without GPS coordinates in the file, a recording does not get a place name.

During import, you can now also select individual files instead of just entire folders. A new metadata filter, called "No value" in the interface, finds recordings that are missing certain information. In addition, the update fixes errors in video analysis and when copying files, and it also improves image selection in large collections as well as the deletion of duplicates.
How does the update fit in with version 2027?
Excire Foto 2027 came onto the market on June 16, 2026, with text recognition in photos, a world map view, and a visual timeline that organizes recordings by days, months, and years. Version 5.1 builds on the map: you can also find places by name instead of just by map section. At Excire, bug fixes and minor improvements are free, while major upgrades cost money, with existing customers getting a discount for them. Excire sells the program as a perpetual license without a subscription.
Excire had not published a separate announcement for 5.1 by November 4, but the product page already lists 5.1.0 as the current version. It remains unclear whether the place names come from a bundled database or from an online service. It is also unclear whether the new video search will also make its way into Excire Search 2026, the extension for Lightroom Classic.
What this means for you
If you own Excire Foto 2027, you install 5.1 at no extra cost. Afterwards, it's best to check with a long clip whose content you know whether the search also finds a scene of just a few seconds. If the scene remains undiscoverable, mark additional individual frames for analysis in the advanced video player.
If you photograph with GPS, it's best to also add place names to your existing archive retroactively. If the coordinates are missing, you add them in the metadata editor of Excire Foto. How to locate photos on the map in Lightroom Classic is shown in the lesson on maps from the Lightroom Classic course.
If you are thinking about buying, it's best to try the 14-day trial version with your own photos and videos. Excire itself recommends this because the program does not process some compressed variants of the supported image formats. One license is valid for up to three computers, but databases from Windows and Mac are not compatible with each other.
DOCMA published the article on November 3, 2026.
