Microsoft is bringing Word, Excel and PowerPoint into the Copilot app. Users create and edit files there without switching apps, and the changes are synchronized with the regular Office apps. The message MC1530611 in the Microsoft 365 admin center's message center describes the change.
At the same time, the three standalone agents for Word, Excel and PowerPoint are going away. According to MC1536062, users will in future edit documents directly in the chat, without first selecting an agent.
What changes in Copilot Chat?
In the chat, you ask directly for a document, a workbook or a presentation, without choosing an agent. According to Microsoft, Copilot will be able to read and edit document content better in the future. The finished files remain in OneDrive or SharePoint, and permissions and retention policies continue to apply unchanged.
On data protection, the two messages sound different. MC1530611 points out that the processing, storage and access of the organization's data will change, and gives no details. MC1536062, on the other hand, states that nothing changes in the data processing of the files. Which statement applies to which data, both messages leave open.
The agents for Word, Excel and PowerPoint will disappear from the left sidebar and from the agent search. The agents can no longer be found, pinned, mentioned with @ or called up. Existing chat histories remain readable, but in these conversations you can no longer work with the agents. For creating and revising, you start a new chat.
Who does the change apply to, and when does it begin?
For Office in Copilot, Microsoft states a worldwide launch. According to MC1530611, the rollout has begun and is supposed to be completed by mid-November. The feature follows the existing Copilot configuration and the policies that administrators assign via Entra ID groups.

According to MC1536062, the removal of the agents affects all users with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license who currently have access to the standalone agents. The replacement begins in mid-November and is supposed to be completed worldwide by the end of December 2026.
The dates in the two messages differ from each other: one expects the rollout to be completed by mid-November, while the other only begins replacing the agents in mid-November. It is therefore best to plan with the later date. Microsoft does not exclude Germany and the EU, and both messages are silent on languages. Whether the German interface includes everything from the start therefore remains open. Neither message mentions private subscriptions.
What this means for you
- Check in Copilot's left sidebar whether the agents for Word, Excel and PowerPoint are still there, and ideally finish ongoing work in these chats before the change. Afterwards the history remains readable, but you can no longer continue working in it.
- It is best to replace saved prompts that call an agent via @ with instructions to the normal chat, and to try out the new instructions first on a copy of a file.
- Ask your IT department what the statement on processing, storage and access in MC1530611 means for your company before you give confidential files to the chat.
- If you look after IT in your team, inform users and the helpdesk and update guides that still refer to the old agents.
- If you have no Copilot license, the removal of the agents does not affect you according to MC1536062. Whether the chat edits Office files for your account depends on your organization's Copilot policies.
It fits that Microsoft is tightening the usage limits for accounts without a license, as the report on the new limits in Copilot Chat shows. Our assessment: Microsoft is turning three specialists into one chat. That spares you the selection, but forces you to adjust, because @ calls and remembered agents are dropped. Teams with fixed prompt templates should test the changeover before mid-November.
