What is a brush anyway?

A brush (brush in .abr file format) is one of the painting tools in Photoshop and is used to apply the current foreground color to an image. A certain number of brushes are already available in Photoshop. Users also have the option of creating their own brushes and saving them as a preset. The preset then has defined properties in terms of size, shape and hardness. This means that images and shapes can also be created as brush tools. Brush presets are an extremely popular tool when working with Photoshop. A set contains a whole number of different brushes on the subject, which can be conveniently loaded and applied.
