Our assessment

Suits you if you are looking for plenty of storage in Switzerland and want to connect a NAS via WebDAV. If you need end-to-end encryption, you have to wait or encrypt files yourself before uploading.

Swiss storage location and DPA

kDrive comes from Infomaniak, a company based in Switzerland. According to the help pages, data is stored and processed exclusively in data centres in Switzerland. Each file is kept on three physical storage media in two data centres so the service keeps running if one fails. Infomaniak states compliance with the GDPR and the revised Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (revDSG).

According to Infomaniak, the data processing agreement is an integral part of the general terms of use; as a hosting provider, Infomaniak acts as processor. So you don't need to request a separate contract. The document is available as a PDF in German.

Encryption: server-side, not end-to-end

kDrive protects transfers with SSL/TLS. Infomaniak encrypts stored data with AES-128 (CBC) and a unique key per kDrive space. This encryption takes place on the servers; kDrive does not currently offer end-to-end encryption where only you hold the key. Infomaniak announces a vault that lets you encrypt data with your own key as available soon.

For you, this means: for everyday project data the protection is enough for many, but for confidential client data you should encrypt files yourself before uploading. You can additionally secure your account with two-factor authentication, for example via the Infomaniak Authenticator app.

Versions, trash and rollback

In kDrive Solo and Team, file versions are kept for 60 days or up to 100 versions, in kDrive Pro for 120 days or 200 versions. Deleted files go to the trash and stay there for at least 30 days; in the kDrive plans you can set the retention to up to 365 days. Once you empty the trash, you can no longer restore its content – Infomaniak therefore advises against emptying it manually.

Useful if you have lost track after many changes: with the restore function you roll back the whole kDrive or parts of it to an earlier state, up to 90 days. However, this does not bring back permanently deleted files or deleted versions.

NAS, WebDAV and apps

All kDrive plans support WebDAV and sync with Synology or QNAP devices. Infomaniak describes the setup with the Synology app Cloud Sync: there you can choose to transfer only local changes in order to back up your NAS data to kDrive. In the free offers kSuite Free and my kSuite, WebDAV is not available.

Desktop apps are available for Windows, macOS and Linux, plus apps for iOS and Android and the web app. On Linux, Infomaniak officially supports only Ubuntu 22.04 LTS; Lite Sync and the context menu are missing there. On your smartphone you can back up photos automatically.

Plans

kDrive Solo offers 3 TB for one user; the storage cannot be expanded. kDrive Team includes six users and from 3 TB, expandable to 18 TB. kDrive Pro is aimed at teams from three users with from 6 TB and is billed per user. You can add more storage in 5 TB steps. The free option is my kSuite with a total of 35 GB for kDrive and email, but without WebDAV.

You choose a term of one month or one, two or three years; longer terms are discounted. You can try kDrive for 30 days and cancel at any time during that period. According to Infomaniak, prices are exclusive of VAT. Current prices are on kDrive's pricing page.

Who kDrive suits

In our view, kDrive suits you if you need plenty of storage located in Switzerland and want to connect your NAS via WebDAV – for example for a photo archive stored on a Synology device. The long trash retention and the rollback of the whole drive help when files disappear by mistake.

If you need to store confidential client data so that even the provider cannot read it, kDrive alone is currently not enough. In that case you encrypt files yourself before uploading or choose a service with end-to-end encryption.

Who is kDrive suitable for?

Editorial assessment

  • For photographers well suited

Back up a photo archive from a NAS to the Swiss cloud

3 TB even in the Solo plan, WebDAV for Synology/QNAP and long trash retention; no end-to-end encryption.

  • For designers partly suited

    Sync and share project files

Sync, password-protected shares and online editing fit; end-to-end encryption is missing for confidential projects.

  • For freelancers and small teams well suited

Team storage in Switzerland with a DPA

Team plan with six users, DPA in the terms of use, data centres in Switzerland.

Conclusion

kDrive stores your data exclusively in data centres in Switzerland, each file on three storage media in two data centres. Even the single-user Solo plan offers 3 TB, and WebDAV plus sync with Synology or QNAP devices are included in all kDrive plans. The trash keeps deleted files for up to 365 days, and the whole kDrive can be rolled back by up to 90 days. The data processing agreement is part of the terms of use. kDrive does not currently offer end-to-end encryption: data is encrypted server-side, and a vault with your own key has been announced. kDrive is a good fit as storage and NAS target with a Swiss location; for confidential client data you should also encrypt files yourself.
