S Sync Sh Sharing
Use cases
Sync confidential project and client data and share it via encrypted links, request files from clients, secure exchange on all devices including Linux and web.
Our assessment
Suits you if encryption is your top priority and you want to exchange client data with a data processing agreement. Less suited as an automatic computer or NAS backup, as there is only two-way sync.
At Tresorit, end-to-end encryption is not an add-on. Every file and its relevant file metadata are encrypted directly on your device before they are uploaded. Tresorit calls this zero-knowledge: the provider itself cannot see your data. Technically, Tresorit uses AES-256 for symmetric and RSA-4096 for asymmetric encryption.
This applies to all plans, from personal to business. For you, however, it also means: keep your password safe. You can additionally protect your account with two-factor authentication.
Tresorit is operated by Tresorit AG in Switzerland, a company of Swiss Post, and uses Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure. By default, encrypted content is stored in data centres in Ireland, i.e. in the EU. Customers based in Switzerland store in Swiss data centres by default.
Only the business plans can choose the storage location themselves: with the data residency options, twelve locations are available, including Germany, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands as well as locations outside Europe such as the US, Canada, Brazil, Singapore and the UAE. Operational metadata such as usage statistics and access information remain separately in Ireland.
From the Professional plan upwards, you conclude a data processing agreement online in the Admin Center after the trial has ended; you receive it via DocuSign. It becomes a binding addendum to the terms of service. Tresorit does not mention this route for the personal plans.
How many versions of a file Tresorit keeps depends on the plan: Personal Lite keeps 5, Personal Essential 10 and Personal Pro 25 versions. For Professional and Business, the help pages state 100 versions, for Business Pro and Enterprise an unlimited number. According to the help pages, you can only download an older version, not set it directly as the current version.
Deleted files can be restored without an expiry date as long as they have not been permanently deleted. Until then, however, they still use storage. Be careful with main folders: they are always deleted permanently right away.
Tresorit syncs in both directions. According to support, an automatic one-way backup that only uploads is currently not available; for a backup you upload files or folders manually. On smartphones there is an automatic camera upload.
Tresorit does not run directly on a NAS or network drive. You can only set up sync via a computer connected to the NAS. Tresorit does not mention protocols such as WebDAV or SFTP.
For personal users there are Personal Lite with 50 GB, Personal Essential with 1 TB and Personal Pro with 4 TB, plus the free Basic plan with 3 GB. For freelancers, Professional is aimed at one user with 4 TB. Business can be booked from three users and is billed per user and month, Business Pro from five users; Enterprise is available on request.
You pay monthly or yearly; yearly payment is discounted. All plans come with a free 14-day trial; after that, it automatically converts to a paid subscription. Current prices are on Tresorit's pricing page.
In our view, Tresorit suits you if you regularly exchange confidential files with clients – such as drafts under confidentiality, contracts or unpublished photos – and want to be sure that nobody but the people involved can read them. With the Professional plan, you also get the data processing agreement as a freelancer.
As the sole backup of your computer or NAS, however, Tresorit is not enough: an automatic one-way backup and direct NAS access are missing. Combine it with a backup service if you need both.
Editorial assessment
For photographers partly suited
Share confidential client images securely
Strong encryption and links; as a backup for large RAW archives, automation and NAS access are missing.
For designers well suited
Exchange confidential projects with clients
End-to-end encryption, file requests and versions suit projects under confidentiality.
For freelancers and small teams well suited
Encrypted team storage with a DPA
DPA from Professional upwards, location choice in Business; plan an addition for backups.
Tresorit encrypts every file and its relevant file metadata on your device; this applies to all plans. Deleted files remain restorable until you remove them permanently, and from the Professional plan upwards you conclude the data processing agreement online. However, only the business plans can choose the storage location, and there is no automatic one-way backup or direct NAS connection. Tresorit is a good fit for secure exchange with clients; as a backup solution you need an addition.
