B Backup
Use cases
Continuous backup of a laptop or desktop including connected USB drives, for example for photo archives and project folders; restoring individual files or entire data sets.
Our assessment
Suits automatic backup of user data on one Mac or Windows PC, including photo archives on USB drives. The operating system and applications are not backed up as a system image. Not suitable for NAS, Linux or servers.
Backblaze Computer Backup is a classic computer backup for Windows and Mac. Once set up, it runs automatically and continuously in the background while you work. It backs up your user data as well as internal drives and connected USB or FireWire drives – with no storage limit per computer.
The operating system, application files and empty folders are not backed up. So you don't get a system image for restoring your machine; in an emergency you reinstall the system and programs and restore your data. With 30-day version history, reconnect external drives at least every 30 days. With one-year history enabled, disconnected drive data remains for up to one year. According to Backblaze, you can also have larger amounts of data sent to you on a USB drive.
Backblaze is based in the USA. When creating your account, you choose the region where your data is stored: US East, US West, EU Central or CA East. EU Central means the data centre in Amsterdam. Important: after account creation, the region can no longer be changed – so decide right at the start.
For the GDPR, Backblaze's data processing agreement (DPA) automatically applies as part of the terms of service, including standard contractual clauses. Backblaze also participates in the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. So you don't need to request a separate agreement.
By default, Backblaze keeps old versions and deleted files for 30 days. At no extra cost for storage, you can switch to one year – a sensible setting for a photo or project archive. With Extended Version History, files are kept indefinitely; for files older than one year you then pay per gigabyte and month.
Files are encrypted before they leave your computer and transferred over a secure HTTPS connection. Optionally, you protect the backup with a private encryption key. According to Backblaze, it never stores the passphrase; for a restore, however, you have to provide it to Backblaze. The restoration process is therefore not fully zero-knowledge.
Computer Backup does not back up network drives, network shares or a NAS. For NAS backups, Backblaze refers to its separate product B2 Cloud Storage. Linux and Windows Server are not supported; the software cannot be installed there.
The apps for iOS and Android are only for accessing your backup. They do not back up your smartphone itself.
Billing is per computer: each computer needs its own licence. You pay monthly, yearly or two years in advance, in US dollars; taxes such as EU VAT are added. There is also a free trial. Current prices are on Backblaze's pricing page.
You restore individual files or entire folders via your account. For large amounts of data, Backblaze offers to send your data to you on a USB drive; if you return the drive, Backblaze says you get a refund. With the apps for iOS and Android you can access backed-up files on the go. If you have set a private key, you need the passphrase for every restore.
In our view, Backblaze suits you if you want to back up a Mac or Windows computer completely with as little effort as possible – including large photo or video archives on external drives. One-year versioning protects you well against mistakes you only notice late.
If you work with a NAS or Linux, or need a server backup, another service or Backblaze B2 is the better fit.

Backblaze Computer Backup is a classic one-way backup: once set up, it continuously backs up all user data on your computer and connected USB drives, with no storage limit. With the EU region Amsterdam and the automatically applicable DPA including standard contractual clauses, it also suits freelancers with client data. There are limits for NAS, network drives, Linux and Windows Server – you need a different solution for those. For external drives: reconnect at least every 30 days with 30-day history. With one-year history enabled, disconnected drive data remains for up to one year. The operating system and applications require separate restoration or reinstallation.
