Encryption

MEGA relies on zero-knowledge encryption. According to MEGA, your data never leaves your device without being encrypted so that only you or people you authorise can read it. This applies to all plans, including the free one.

For you this means: keep your password and recovery key safe. You share files via links that you can protect with a password and an expiry date.

Provider and storage location

Who your contracting party is depends on how you buy. If you buy via the website, according to the terms you conclude the contract with MEGA Privacy Kft in Hungary. If you buy via the App Store or Google Play, it's MEGA Networks LLC in the USA.

According to the terms, MEGA stores data in primary data centres in Japan, Canada and/or the European Union; MEGA does not operate primary storage infrastructure in the USA. We did not find that you can choose the storage location yourself. Nor did we find a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR. If you want to store personal data of your clients, clarify this beforehand with MEGA and your data protection advisor.

Versions, Rewind and trash

MEGA keeps up to 100 versions per file, on all plans. With Rewind you restore folders to an earlier state: up to 60 days on paid plans, while on the free plan you can only view the last 30 days.

The trash is generous too: on paid plans you set automatic emptying anywhere between 7 days and 10 years, on the free plan between 7 and 30 days. A long retention helps especially with archives you rarely tidy up – though it keeps using storage.

Backup and NAS

According to the plan table, automatic backups are part of all plans. In the Android app, MEGA describes the backup function as one-way sync – folders are transferred to the cloud without changes in the cloud affecting your computer.

For NAS systems there is no dedicated app in the interface but the command-line tool MEGAcmd. It can provide a WebDAV or FTP server through which other programs access MEGA, and MEGA offers packages for QNAP and Synology. This requires some technical knowledge.

Plans and billing

The Pro plans range from Pro Lite with 750 GB through Pro I with 3 TB and Pro II with 10 TB to Pro III with 20 TB; there is also Essential with 200 GB. The free plan offers 20 GB. Pro Flexi starts at 3 TB and charges additional storage and transfer per TB. Business plans start at three users.

You pay monthly or yearly; according to MEGA, yearly billing is up to 17 percent cheaper. Billing is in euros. Besides storage, every plan has a limited transfer volume. You'll find current prices on MEGA's pricing page.

Who MEGA suits

In our view, MEGA suits you if you want to store large photo or video archives encrypted and value long retention periods for versions and trash. If you store client data and need a data processing agreement and a fixed storage location in the EU, a service with a clearly documented EU location and DPA is the safer choice.

Who is MEGA suitable for?

Editorial assessment

  • For photographers well suited

    Large, encrypted photo archive

Plenty of storage, 100 versions and long trash retention; for client images clarify location and DPA.

  • For designers well suited

Protect project files with versions and Rewind

100 versions per file and Rewind up to 60 days protect working states.

  • For freelancers and small teams partly suited

    Encrypted team storage

Business from three users; no DPA found, storage locations also outside the EU.

Conclusion

MEGA offers encrypted online storage, synchronisation and backup tools. NAS integration through MEGAcmd is documented in the official vendor repository. The previously recorded pricing, contracting entity, data locations, version history, Rewind and trash retention still require direct confirmation before approval. A data processing agreement and guaranteed EU-only storage are not confirmed by the current source review.
