Whether flyer, club magazine, magazine, book or manual: layout programs put text and images on the page and create print-ready or digital files. This comparison sets twelve programs side by side, from classic DTP software for prepress and long documents to graphics programs with layout features and browser-based design platforms that work with templates. They include subscriptions, perpetual licences and free programs for Windows, macOS, Linux and the browser. It is based on vendor information with source and retrieval date, and we calculate costs over three years for one workstation.

How we compare

  1. Where the information comes from

All information is based on the vendors’ own pages: product and pricing pages, manuals, help articles, release notes and licence terms. Every statement has a source with its retrieval date. A documented feature says nothing about how well or how fast it works in practice. Statements on quality, speed or stability therefore come only from the vendors, as far as they make any; assessments such as “suits …” are worded as such. Anything that could not be verified is marked as open or not verified in the table.

  2. How the features are classified

A feature counts as available if the vendor documents it for the edition considered. AI features are the exception: the row “AI features in layout” shows what the program offers in any plan; the row “AI features in the plan considered” shows whether the plan compared includes them or whether they are only available with active maintenance, an extra subscription or a higher plan. Real-time collaboration, brand templates, updates and cancellation always refer to the plan considered. For features with several options, such as prepress or import, the table only lists the options that are documented; if an option is missing, it is either not documented or, according to the vendor, not available. Details and limitations are given in the chapters on each program. Features that only an add-on subscription, a higher edition or another program unlocks are explicitly marked as such there.

Works offline: yes means the program runs without internet after installation and activation, for subscriptions during the paid term. Partly means it requires an online licence check at fixed intervals, or core functions need internet. No means it only runs online, for example in the browser. Cloud services such as AI tools, template and image libraries or online fonts do not count; they are covered in the program texts.

  3. Reference edition, status and prices

For each program, the comparison looks at one reference edition for one person at one workstation. Price, features and assessment refer to the same edition. Further editions and plans are listed under “All plans”.

    Pricing rules:

    • The period considered is three years, assuming unchanged prices and without any price guarantee.
    • Calculations use euro prices including VAT for Germany.
    • For subscriptions, the regular price counts. If new customers first pay a lower price without an end date, that price and then the regular price count. Time-limited discounts with an end date are not included.
    • Perpetual licences are spread over three years at the purchase price. This corresponds to the scenario of continuing to use the purchased version without paid upgrades. A subscription, by contrast, delivers new versions during this time, so the two are not the same. If an included maintenance plan renews automatically, the calculation only applies if you cancel the renewal in time; the cost with continued maintenance is shown with the plan.
    • Free programs have no licence costs; donations are voluntary.
    • Browser-based programs are considered with the plan for one person; team plans are only listed under “All plans”.
    • Packages for several seats, such as a family pack or a team plan with a second licence, are calculated for one seat in use at the full package price.
    • If a vendor states a price without VAT, the system adds the German standard rate. It converts prices in US dollars into euros at the reference rate of the European Central Bank; the result is an approximation, and the amount at checkout may differ.
    • If a vendor does not state whether VAT is included, the plan is treated as not directly comparable.

Information is as of the retrieval date of each source. Prices and versions change frequently; the current details at the vendor always apply.

  4. Selection and order

The comparison covers twelve programs from three groups: classic layout and DTP programs for print products and publications, graphics programs with layout features, and browser-based design platforms that work mainly with templates. In addition, there is one program for technical documentation. The selection is a starting point, not a complete market overview. The order is an editorial classification, not a measured ranking. Free programs do not automatically come off worse and expensive ones not automatically better, and more features do not automatically mean a better program. TutKit courses on individual programs did not influence selection or order. There are no partner or affiliate links in this comparison.

The editorial team sets the order. In descending weight, it is based on: suitability for the audience’s typical use, features as compared here, pricing model (such as a free version, one-off purchase or subscription), and data protection and server location.

Research and drafts are partly AI-assisted; every statement has been checked editorially against its source and is the responsibility of Stefan Petri.

How we are funded

These comparisons are funded by commissions from affiliate links (marked *). TutKit also sells its own courses on some programs; they are marked “TutKit’s own offer” and are not part of the selection. There are no paid placements on these pages.

Buying guide

Which layout program suits you depends on four questions: What do you design, meaning individual print products, multi-page publications, technical documentation or designs for social media? How important are print-ready files and exchange with print shops or InDesign users? Do you work alone or in a team with fixed brand guidelines? And do you want a subscription, a perpetual licence or a free program? The twelve programs in this comparison fall roughly into three groups that differ clearly on these questions.

Classic layout programs

InDesign, Affinity, QuarkXPress, VivaDesigner and Scribus are classic DTP programs. All five offer master pages, paragraph and character styles, linked text frames and a baseline grid, and they output print PDFs to PDF/X. Adobe FrameMaker works with the same basics but is geared towards long, structured documents. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite and Xara Designer Pro+ are mainly graphics programs that also design multi-page documents. Swift Publisher is a simple layout program for the Mac with many templates and built-in mail merge.

Browser-based design platforms

Canva, Adobe Express and Marq work with templates, brand guidelines and real-time collaboration. For social media graphics, flyers and presentations they get you to a result quickly; however, the vendors do not describe classic typesetting features such as master pages, tables of contents or footnotes. Canva is also available as an app for Windows, macOS and mobile devices, where you can edit prepared designs offline for up to 14 days. Adobe Express and Marq need an internet connection.

Print files and prepress

PDF/X, spot colours, a separations or overprint preview, preflight and bleed are documented for InDesign, Scribus and CorelDRAW. Affinity and QuarkXPress offer PDF/X, spot colours, preflight and bleed; a separations preview is not documented for them. For VivaDesigner, PDF/X, preflight and bleed are documented, spot colours are not. Xara Designer Pro+ and FrameMaker output PDF/X with spot colours and colour separations, but the vendors do not describe a preflight check. Canva, Adobe Express and Marq create print PDFs with bleed; Canva and Adobe Express only offer CMYK on export, none of the three describes PDF/X or spot colours, and according to its help Marq does not support Pantone swatches. Swift Publisher outputs PDFs with bleed and crop marks, but CMYK only to a limited extent.

Books, magazines and e-books

For books, magazines and catalogues, InDesign, Affinity, QuarkXPress and VivaDesigner offer a table of contents, index, footnotes and a book function that combines several documents. These four and FrameMaker also output EPUB. Scribus has a table of contents, footnotes and cross-references but still classifies footnotes as experimental; its help does not describe an index, book file or EPUB. Xara Designer Pro+ creates an automatic table of contents, CorelDRAW does not describe any features for long documents, and according to its FAQ Swift Publisher has no table of contents.

Technical documentation

For manuals with conditional text, cross-references and an XML or DITA structure, FrameMaker is the program intended for this in the comparison. It outputs content as PDF, HTML and EPUB, but only runs on Windows 11 and only by subscription. InDesign supports conditional text and XML, but DITA support is not documented there. VivaDesigner exports XML; the readable vendor sources do not document conditional text or cross-references.

Exchange with InDesign

IDML, the InDesign exchange format, is opened by Affinity, QuarkXPress, VivaDesigner, Scribus and Marq; in Xara Designer Pro+ IDML import is a beta feature. According to the vendors, Affinity and VivaDesigner also open INDD documents, and Adobe Express imports them as well; QuarkXPress only converts INDD with InDesign installed. How completely tables, anchored objects or complex styles come across depends on the document. Among the other programs, QuarkXPress exports back to the InDesign format according to its vendor, as an IDML package for print layouts. VivaDesigner names an export to InDesign format depending on the edition; whether the Commercial Edition includes it and which format it creates is not confirmed. With print shops, you exchange files as PDF in all programs.

Templates, brand and team

Canva Pro, Adobe Express Premium and Marq Pro offer brand assets with colours, fonts and logos, many templates and real-time collaboration. Templates in which others can only change approved areas are only available in Adobe Express from the Teams plan; Marq Pro only locks elements completely, finer locks come with Team. Data-driven layouts from tables are created by Canva Pro and Adobe Express with bulk create, by InDesign, Affinity and CorelDRAW with data merge or print merge, and by Swift Publisher with mail merge for labels and cards. For collaboration, the desktop programs mostly rely on comments or passing on the file; in CorelDRAW the comment tools are only available with a subscription, with maintenance or, for the perpetual licence, for an extra charge. QuarkXPress and VivaDesigner also describe ways of editing parts of a document in parallel, and InDesign uses the separate InCopy for this; the vendors do not describe real-time co-editing as on the browser platforms for their desktop programs.

AI features

Where generative AI is available, it usually runs on the vendor’s servers and uses credits or a monthly allowance. Canva Pro and Adobe Express offer the most AI tools, from writing and translating to images and resizing formats. InDesign generates and expands images and rephrases text. VivaDesigner writes and translates text, as does QuarkXPress, but with the perpetual licence only while maintenance is active. CorelDRAW generates images and vector graphics, the perpetual licence with a one-off credit allowance. In Affinity, the AI tools are only unlocked with a Canva premium plan, and Marq only offers AI in the Enterprise plan. Whether AI is included in the plan considered is shown in a separate row of the table. Affinity can also be connected to the AI assistant Claude via a connector that creates workflows as scripts; Affinity calls the connector free of charge during the beta, and your use of Claude depends on your Claude plan. No AI features are documented for Scribus, Swift Publisher, Xara Designer Pro+ and FrameMaker. Whether your content is used to train AI models is handled differently by the vendors; the details are in the table.

Subscription, perpetual licence or free

Scribus as free software and Affinity with a free Canva account can be used free of charge. VivaDesigner offers a permanently free Free Edition with limited features, and Canva, Adobe Express and Marq have free plans with limits. You can buy CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, QuarkXPress, VivaDesigner and Swift Publisher once. QuarkXPress includes one year of maintenance, which then renews automatically unless you cancel it; new versions are only available with maintenance. The three-year cost of the perpetual licence in this comparison therefore only applies if you cancel the renewal in time; the cost with continued maintenance is shown with the plan. InDesign, FrameMaker, Xara Designer Pro+, Canva Pro, Adobe Express Premium and Marq Pro are only available by subscription. A perpetual licence stays at its version without a paid upgrade, while a subscription delivers new versions as long as it runs. Marq and Xara state their prices in euros but without VAT; the comparison adds German VAT. It also converts prices in US dollars, for example in the Swift Publisher store, into euros, which gives an approximation. VivaDesigner does not state whether VAT is included, so its price is treated as not directly comparable.

Platforms

InDesign, Affinity, QuarkXPress and CorelDRAW run on Windows and macOS. Scribus and VivaDesigner are also available for Linux; on Macs with Apple processors, VivaDesigner currently runs via Rosetta. FrameMaker and Xara Designer Pro+ are Windows-only, and Swift Publisher is Mac-only. Canva, Adobe Express and Marq run in the browser, and Canva and Adobe Express also as apps for mobile devices.

Terms

Master page (parent page)

A template for pages with recurring elements such as page number, header, logo or column grid. If you change the master page, all pages based on it change too. InDesign’s English help now calls it a parent page.

Paragraph and character styles

Saved formatting for font, size, spacing and indents. If all headings use the same paragraph style, you can change them all later with one click. Character styles apply to individual words, for example for emphasis.

Linked text frames (text flow)

Text runs from one frame into the next, even across several pages. If you shorten or lengthen the text, it reflows. This is fundamental for brochures, magazines and books.

Baseline grid

An invisible grid of lines to which lines of text are aligned. This keeps lines in neighbouring columns and on the front and back of a page at the same height.

CMYK and spot colours

CMYK stands for the four process inks cyan, magenta, yellow and black, which offset printing mixes into colour images. Spot colours such as Pantone or HKS colours are printed as a separate, pre-mixed ink, for example for an exact corporate colour.

PDF/X

A standard for print PDFs. Among other things, it requires embedded fonts and clearly defined colours and excludes content that causes problems in print. Many print shops ask for PDF/X-1a, PDF/X-3 or PDF/X-4.

Bleed

A narrow margin by which background images and colour areas extend beyond the final format. The paper is trimmed after printing; without bleed, white strips can appear at the edge.

Preflight

An automatic check before output: are fonts or images missing, is the image resolution too low, are colour spaces or bleed correct? This lets you find errors before the print shop reports them.

Separations and overprint preview

Shows on screen how your document is split into the individual inks and whether elements overprint or knock out. This lets you see, for example, whether a spot colour has accidentally been converted to CMYK.

IDML and INDD

INDD is the document format of InDesign. IDML (InDesign Markup Language) is the corresponding open exchange format. Other layout programs can often open IDML but do not always carry over every detail. The table shows which programs open IDML or INDD.

EPUB (reflowable and fixed layout)

The standard format for e-books. A reflowable EPUB adapts the text to the screen size, while a fixed-layout EPUB keeps the page layout as in print.

Data merge

The program automatically fills a layout with data from a table, for example names for business cards, details for labels or texts for many social media graphics.

Conditional text

Passages of text are shown or hidden for specific outputs, for example for two product variants or for print and web. This lets you maintain one document instead of several copies. It is common above all in technical documentation.

XML and DITA

In structured authoring, content and design are separate: the text is stored as XML, and the layout is only created on output. DITA is an XML standard for technical documentation.

Brand kit and locked templates

A brand kit collects a brand’s logos, colours and fonts in one place. In locked templates, team members only change approved areas such as text and images, while the logo and layout stay fixed.

Subscription, perpetual licence and free use

With a subscription you pay regularly and get new versions as long as it runs; when it ends, you usually can no longer use the program. With a perpetual licence you pay once and keep using the purchased version; new major versions usually require a paid upgrade. Free programs have no licence costs but may require an account.

Conclusion

The twelve programs cover very different tasks. For print products, magazines and books, InDesign, Affinity, QuarkXPress and VivaDesigner offer the broadest documented feature set, from master pages and styles to PDF/X and preflight to index, book function and EPUB. InDesign exchanges layouts directly with print shops and agencies via INDD and IDML but requires an ongoing subscription. Affinity offers a similar scope without licence costs but does not export back to the InDesign format. QuarkXPress and VivaDesigner are available as perpetual licences, and Scribus as free software also for Linux, with smaller gaps for long documents. FrameMaker is the program for structured technical documentation in this comparison. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite and Xara Designer Pro+ combine graphics and layout with solid print output, and Swift Publisher makes simple print products accessible on the Mac without a subscription. Canva, Adobe Express and Marq focus on templates, brand guidelines and teamwork in the browser, plus AI, which Marq only offers in its Enterprise plan; in our view they suit social media, marketing and simple print products, not books or demanding prepress. First decide what you want to design and how your print shop needs the files, then use a trial version or a free plan to try out whether the program suits the way you work.

Frequently asked questions

Which layout program is free?

Scribus is free software under the GPL, without activation or subscription, for Windows, macOS and Linux. You use Affinity with a free Canva account with all layout tools; only the AI tools require a Canva premium plan. VivaDesigner has a permanently free Free Edition with a limited feature set, which according to the vendor you may also use commercially. Canva, Adobe Express and Marq offer free plans with limits, for example on templates, storage, export quality or AI.

Can I open InDesign files without InDesign?

Partly. IDML, the InDesign exchange format, is opened by Affinity, QuarkXPress, VivaDesigner, Scribus and Marq; in Xara Designer Pro+ IDML import is a beta feature. According to the vendors, Affinity and VivaDesigner open INDD documents, Adobe Express imports them as well, and QuarkXPress only converts INDD with InDesign installed. How completely tables, anchored objects or complex styles come across depends on the document; allow time for checking and rework. Among the other programs, QuarkXPress exports back to IDML according to its vendor; VivaDesigner names an export to InDesign format depending on the edition, which is not confirmed for the Commercial Edition.

Is Canva good enough for professional print files?

For many simple print products, yes: Canva Pro outputs print PDFs with bleed, crop marks and a CMYK colour profile. However, the editor works with RGB values, the bleed is fixed, and Canva does not describe PDF/X, spot colours or separations. Adobe Express is similar, as it also only offers CMYK on PDF export. If your print shop requires PDF/X or spot colours, a classic layout program such as InDesign, Affinity, QuarkXPress or Scribus is the safer choice.

What is the difference between a DTP program and a design platform such as Canva?

A DTP program is designed for typesetting and prepress: master pages, paragraph and character styles, text flow across many pages, tables of contents, PDF/X and spot colours. The files are usually stored locally on your computer. A design platform such as Canva, Adobe Express or Marq focuses on templates, brand guidelines and collaboration in the browser, depending on the plan also on AI, and outputs mainly for social media and simple print products. Many teams use both: the DTP program for publications and print files, the platform for quick everyday variants.

Which program is suitable for books and e-books?

InDesign, Affinity, QuarkXPress and VivaDesigner offer master pages, paragraph and character styles, table of contents, index, footnotes and a book function, and they output EPUB. Affinity costs nothing, QuarkXPress and VivaDesigner are available as perpetual licences, and InDesign by subscription. Scribus is also an option for simpler books; however, its help describes neither an index nor a book file nor EPUB, and footnotes are considered experimental. For e-books with fixed and reflowable layout, InDesign and Affinity document both EPUB variants.

Which layout programs are available without a subscription?

You can buy CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, QuarkXPress, VivaDesigner and Swift Publisher once. QuarkXPress includes one year of maintenance, which then renews automatically unless you cancel it; without maintenance you keep the last version you downloaded. The three-year cost of the perpetual licence in this comparison only applies if you cancel the renewal in time. The VivaDesigner Personal Edition is only intended for private and non-profit purposes. You can work completely free of charge with Scribus and Affinity. Keep in mind: a perpetual licence stays at its version without a paid upgrade.

Which programs run on Linux or only on the Mac?

Scribus and VivaDesigner are available for Linux; you use the browser platforms Canva, Adobe Express and Marq in a supported browser regardless of the operating system anyway. Swift Publisher is Mac-only, and FrameMaker and Xara Designer Pro+ are Windows-only. InDesign, Affinity, QuarkXPress and CorelDRAW run on Windows and macOS. On Macs with Apple processors, VivaDesigner currently runs via Rosetta.

Can I use the programs without internet?

After installation and activation, Affinity, Scribus, CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, Xara Designer Pro+ and Swift Publisher run without internet; the vendors do not describe a regular online licence check there. InDesign and FrameMaker check the licence online at fixed intervals, and QuarkXPress and VivaDesigner need a connection for the licence or registration. In the app, Canva lets you edit prepared designs offline for up to 14 days, while Adobe Express and Marq always need internet. AI features, template libraries and online fonts need a connection in all programs.

Do I need FrameMaker for technical documentation?

Not necessarily, but in this comparison FrameMaker is geared towards this task: structured authoring with XML and DITA, conditional text, book files, cross-references and index, and output as PDF, HTML and EPUB. InDesign offers conditional text and XML, but DITA support is not documented there. For shorter guides, programs with a book function, tables of contents and cross-references such as Affinity or QuarkXPress are also sufficient. Note that FrameMaker only runs on Windows 11 and only by subscription.
